*A 5 star workload is an easy workload; a 3 star is average; whereas a 1 star workload is extremely hard.
Comments:1322 - Calc 2: He's defenitely a smart guy, but if you want to get a good grasp of the material he's not the professor for you. I somehow ended with an A but that's definitely due to the fact that he gives weekly take home quizzes (homework) and does open note tests. By the final I was so confused and miraculously passed it with a 70 (not open note). I found that most of the material I ended up teaching myself with the textbook (which honestly wasn't that helpful either). If you want to fully understand the subject you've gotta put the work in outside of class and expect to teach yourself. A week before the final he taught us what I would consider a month's worth of material which ended up taking up a significant portion of the final He's really sweet and funny, but not the best teacher. Also, he has a bit of an accent, but you get used to it after a couple classes so don't let that scare you. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:Bus. Calc (1309) - Tim is extremely hard to understand, and is not meant to be a professor. He does not have the ability to get students to engage and everyone sits on their phones/laptops the entire class. We had homework once a week and then take home pdf tests. The best part of the class was the take home tests, as they allowed you to utilize the textbook to help. This is honestly how I passed the class. The only reason I'd recommend taking the class is because of the take home tests. However, the final is departmental and the class will really screw you over for it due to complete lack of knowledge. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1309 - Can not teach for his life, you will not understand anything this professor says. But, all of our test were take home and done over a course of 5 days which was really nice. Homework given on Thursday and due tuesday and has 2-3 problems on it. You will not know how to do anything but you get to do take home test which is really nice to keep a good grade. Overall, terrible teacher and you won't know how to do anything. I would take again just because of the take home test. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:PDE - I just want to say that Dr. Sheng is a really kind person. This past semester, I was going through an especially hard time in my life. As a result of that, I also didn't do as well in class as I could have. I never mentioned it to him, but he noticed and asked me about it while I was looking at a test during office hours. I brushed his concerns off and still didn't admit anything to him, but I really appreciated his concern and lowkey almost cried. Another event that sticks out in my mind is the semester prior, when I was in his ODE class. The class had done particularly poorly on a test, and he ended up giving us a pep talk of sorts where he essentially told us that as long as we try our best, it is okay, and that failure does not define us. He ended up looking over our tests again to give us some more points back wherever he could. Dr. Sheng has a very terse and frank way of speaking, so it can be hard to tell sometimes, but he genuinely cares about his students and wants them to succeed. As for his PDE class, it was fine. PDE in itself is a hard subject, but Dr. Sheng's workload is pretty straightforward and not too difficult. He has weekly quizzes that were essentially take-home quizzes, and they were worth a large chunk of the grade - 10 quizzes total worth 30% of the final average - so don't blow them off. He has a mid-semester project that I learned a lot from doing. And for his tests, he tells you the type of problems that will be on them beforehand. I didn't do as well in his class as I could have, but that was because I didn't put as much effort as I should have. - Grade In Class:B+
Comments:Partial Differential Eqns - Dr. Sheng is a kind and interesting person, and in a class like PDE he often is very interested in the subject matter, however he does lack a certain ability to teach and answer questions effectively. He has trouble understanding student questions and students have trouble understanding him. Just like most math classes, he gives assignments from the book which are not graded, and every week there is an open-book, open-note quiz where a question is picked from the assignment. The problem is that most people don't learn, can't finish the homework, then do poorly on the quizzes (which were worth 3% of the final grade each). On one quiz the class average was a 40%. For exams, we had three in-class, closed-book/note exams where he often told you the types of questions there would be. The final in this instance was a project final, which used a lot of coding, and was very difficult but was graded very easily. Overall, easier than all other PDE teachers, but a worse instructor than probably all of them. - Grade In Class:B
Comments:1321 - Let me preface this by saying I passed the AP Calc exam in high school. Having said that, this class was super easy. His accent is not a problem at all. He is very nice and really cares about his students doing well. If you are struggling don't be an idiot: go to his office hours. He quizzes you on the homework, so do it. I don't know how his teaching is because I would never pay attention. He moves pretty fast and doesn't really say anything that isn't in the book, so I guess if you have never had calc it would be tough to keep up. If you are just getting a refresher in calc, this will be a good review and easy A. His tests are 4 or 5 simple questions. His test questions are literally straight out of the book, just not on the homework. To study just do problems from the book and you will recognize them when the test comes. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1321 - What to say about Dr. Sheng.. He is a nice guy no doubt about it. He does have an accent which I truly did not find to be much of a problem. The class consists of 4 exams and a final. Each week he gives a quiz in class consisting of a few hw problems. The only problems with that is that he quizzes you on the questions that almost everyone had a hard time with. He spend no time reviewing hw and there is no time to really ask questions. He pretty much flies through the lecture and the only thing he covers are the examples that came from the book. Pretty much all the math teachers at Baylor SUCK.. I didnt expect his class to be easy but I didnt think it would be on the level that it was. Again he is a nice guy and is very knowledgable but that pretty much does nothing for you as a student. His syllabus states there will be a review before each exam, there werent any reviews nor SI's until the final exam rolled around and he rushed through the hour session with no time for questions or thorough explanations. I forgot to mention the exams are only about 5 questions and he tries to give partial credit but missing even one will drop your grade by 20%. Dr. Sheng states in the beginning of the semester that this class is for students who have taken Cal before in high school and have a decent foundation. I had not taken Cal before nor do I enjoy Calculus in any shape or form.. Naturally I should have dropped but I missed the date to do so and got stuck.. The D in his class RUINED my GPA.. - Grade In Class:D
Comments:ODE - Tim gives three tests, a final, and ten quizzes averaged together for a quiz grade. There's no honework to be turned in, but the quizzes are problems straight from the suggested homework problems from each section, and they're all open note/open book. He tells you the class before which problems to have worked out, so he basically gives you the quiz before you come to class. He gives a fair amount of odd numbered problems, so if you have a solutions manual, they're already worked out for you. His teaching style is basically to follow through the examples in the book, without a whole lot of detail. I found it really difficult to pay attention in class. Most of the time, I ended up teaching myself the material before each test. But the material really isn't too difficult to learn after you've taken Calculus and he's a really easy grader. He doesn't take off for sign mistakes and he gives a lot of partial credit. Towards the end of the class though, the material starts getting tougher and I had a hard time figuring it out on my own. I never went in to his office hours, though, so that probably would've helped. Overall, I would say his class is easier than the other teachers... but you might have to learn a lot of the material on your own. I'm not taking him for PDE, basically because I need more in-class instruction. I would recommend him for an easy grade though. But buy the solutions manual! Oh, to study for tests, just do all the suggested homework problems - most of his test questions are copied exactly from the problem list. And I mean, verbatum. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:Pre-cal - Took this during summer school. Got an A but had to work for it. He is a great and gentle man. It is a little tough although to understand his accent and sometimes he tends to go a little fast paced. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:MTH 2321 - Receiving the lowest grade ever for a class at Baylor, one would expect a session of severe lambasting. Not so. Dr. Sheng is a very nice and quiet professor whose adeptness in his field has garnered him many honors outside and inside the classroom. With his appreciative stories and metaphors, he draws connections from all fields (not excluding religion) to the world of mathematics. He is not, disappointingly, a good teacher. His lectures are almost a verbatim regurgitation from the book-examples and all. Many times, I had to teach myself the material (but don't despair: he has plenty of office hours). His quizzes are basically homework problems and his tests are a good determinant of whether or not a student is familiar with the material. I may be brooding over my grade and loss of GPA, but I am not brooding over my having taken him. - Grade In Class:B
Comments:1322 - Tim gives quizes every week, but they are the homework problems that he gives earlier. The tests have 5-7 questions. If you don't understand something Tim will explain it in more understandable terms if you go to his office and ask. You do have to do a decent amount of studying, but the class isn't hard, just a little time consuming. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:Calc III - Tim is a very nice and very helpful professor. Sometimes he may not explain things well in class but he is always available in his office and will always help with any questions you will have. Tests are straightforward but thorough. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1322 - Tim is a great guy. He's really nice and knows math really well. He explains concepts in depth and works out example problems on the board. You don't really have to pay attention in class, just copy down what he writes on the board. The HW quizzes are awesome and the reason i made a B instead of a C. Tests aren't hard, they're really short. He's really funny and a nice guy. - Grade In Class:B+
Comments:Cal II - Professor Tim's class requires almost no work with the exception of Quizzes every Wednesday. They are actually a grade booster, he will tell you the exact problems that will be on the quiz and let you bring your paper that you used to work them out on for your quiz. Automatic 100 if you actually do the problems. Half the time he gives you odd problems and you can just check your answers. Gives 3 tests and a final. Tests haven't been that difficult, usually 5-7 questions. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1322 - If you have taken Dr. Tim for 1321, then expect the same class with slightly more difficult material. For anyone thinking of taking Tim for the first time make sure you buy the answer manual because you’ll be doing a lot of problem working on your own. Tim’s class consists of about 3-4 Tests and a Quiz every Wednesday…other than that you will come to class and watch Tim work example problems. The Quizzes are great because they are open note and you will be given the problems the Monday before the quiz. So in the end of the semester you can count on averaging in a 100 to your test grades which is great because Tim’s tests are much harder than his quizzes (although they are graded easily). Tim is really nice and is usually in his office if you need help…but when you get there he does little more than act like a security blanket…you’ll still be working the problem on your own. The major plus in Tim’s class is that he assigns virtually no checked HW. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1321 - he really enjoys teaching, but he only goes over the examples that are in the book. He gives a few homework problems a week that he then quizzes you on, but you can copy your homework if you did it so its basically free points. The tests are hard because he only gives a few questions so if you miss one its a lot of points. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:Multiple - I have taken Dr. Sheng for multiple classes, and I highly suggest you get to know this person. He is exceptionally talented in his field, and is very understanding when it comes to grades and workload. He wants to see success in all of his students, which is extremely valuable in a teacher. He does have a strong accent, but along with the occasional difficulties in understanding what he is saying, you get hilarious inside jokes and within a week you shouldn't have any problems. He is almost always available in his office - and I'm not kidding when I say always; he is often in his office until 11PM and is willing to take a break from his research to help students - when you go to his office he will clarify anything that was difficult to understand earlier. Dr. "Tim" is understanding when it comes to grades, and if you have a legitimate case to bring to him he will either let you correct or retake an exam you haven't done too well in. He is concerned with learning, and making the education process something an individual can claim "his or her own." If you decide to take this professor, try to get to know him; you will not regret it! - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1321 - Dr. Tim's class was one of the easiest to sit through as he really enjoys teaching. Basically all you do is watch him work example problems straight from the chapter and then get assigned 3-5 hw problems a week which he will then let you have an open note quiz on. (So basically you get a free 100 test grade after he averages the quizes together. As for the tests...those are a different story. Exceptionally hard. But because he assigns no offical homework that he checks other than the 3-5 problems a week, it's a balance. Don't freak out at his accent the first week or two, you come to understand it. Sit at the front and pay attention. If you've taken calc before, this class will probably be an easy A if you study on your own - Grade In Class:B+
Comments:Calc II - Pretty cool guy. When I failed his second test because I was sick he let me retake it the moment I asked. I think if you paid attention you would get it. The class is not really anything except him working out example problems and explaining how to work them. He makes random jokes that he thinks are funny, but I laugh at his laugh. I like him. He's endearing. What pushed my grade up was the final which was 5 problems and he must of either been really generous with the partial credit or I did really well. It was worth just a little less than our total grade. He has weekly quizzes that are straight off of the homework he assigns. The tests are all work out problems and there are about 5-9 per test, so if you don't know your material you'll fail. He's good with partial credit though. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1321 - Dr. Tim is a really nice guy, quite the character. Little asain man with a really funny accent. He keep me entertained but he should stick to classified government work and not teaching. He expects people to have taken calc before but i never had and had to bust my a** to pull a B by the end of the semester. good guy, bad teacher - Grade In Class:B
Comments:1321 - Dr. Sheng is this tiny little man from Singapore that loves Calculus but can't really bring it down to a college level. He is really difficult to understand bc of his accent. He gives quizzes every Wednesday. The class averages on the tests were always between 50 and 60 and he never gave a curve. His tests were very difficult but most of the problems were from the homework assignments but with different numbers. Do the homework so you can keep up and attend his test reviews. He loves teaching so his class is easier to sit through than a teacher that hates his job. - Grade In Class:B
Comments:1321 - If I hadn't already taken Calculus in high school, I would have failed his class. So basically, if you've already had calc, this class is a breeze. Otherwise, you're in for some fun times. Heavy heavy accent, and sometimes, it's very difficult to understand him... On the bright side, you can tell he knows what he's talking about, but he has no way of relaying that information to the class, therefore, he just does examples from the book, so when you try to do homework later.. it's difficult. Oh right, you are given an sheet with suggested problems.. and he will never take it up. I suggest you do the suggested problems, it will make the tests seem a lot easier if you've progressively practiced those kinds of problems. Quizzes are super easy too. He tells you maybe two or three problems that will be the quiz for next class, and he'll just pick one or two problems. Quizzes and tests are every wednesday... Tests are generally really easy too, its maybe 6-8 questions and the last one is usually worth a lot of points.. maybe 30. I hope everyone else gets a different TA then I did.. because no partial credit for me. In conclusion, if you've had calculus before and did well, this class should be fine. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1322 - I can understand the previous comments about "Tim". He has a very strong accent, but I had no trouble understanding what he was saying. The tests were really easy, with only a few curveballs thrown in there. The grader is very lenient with partial credit and also curves the highest grade to 100. The homework is optional, but I highly recommend getting the solutions manual as a study guide. I never did the homework and studied 2-3 days before each test and aced the course. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1321 - A very smart guy, knows what he's doing, but unfortunately, doesn't teach very well. Take him if you did well in Calculus in highschool because it'll be one of your easiest classes; otherwise, don't take Dr. Sheng, especially at 8 am. You won't learn anything!! His second test is the easiest, I got a 98. It's very hard to pay attention in his class because you won't understand his accent and the stuff that he "teaches" doesn't really help. Weekly quizzes are super easy. The solution manual is a must-have in his class because he doesn't go over hw and there's no time in class to ask. A very nice, smart guy, but i wouldnt take him again, especially at 8 T_T - Grade In Class:B+
Comments:1321 - Although this man is very intellegent, he has zero ability to get his points across in a clear way. Once you get used to his "sing-lish" accent, you discover that he is not actually teaching anything that you couldn't teach yourself. He reads straight from the book on EVERY example that he gives in class. So if you don't understand the book, too bad, its what you are getting. His tests are filled with at least 2 problems that have never been see before by the entire class (a real grade dropper that isn't avoidalbe). I think that his major downfall is that he skips a lot of little details about Calculus because he assumes that everyone already understands everything. No, I'm sorry Tim, we all don't have a doctorate in Mathematics. He is a really really nice man but I think that they should boot him from ground level Calculus. Good luck teaching yourself math if you get him. - Grade In Class:C
Comments:1321 - Professor Sheng is a nice fellow; short, somewhat dorky asian guy with an accent. Unfortunately, unless you already know everything there is to know about Calculus, taking Sheng will be VERY difficult. He's practically a rocket scientist and you can tell HE understands the work, but he doesn't do too well at conveying this to students. He has quizzes every Wednesday with 1 or 2 questions directly from the homework (which isn't too bad if you have a solution manual) but the tests are INSANE. Overall a nice guy, but if you're not good at math, take someone else. - Grade In Class:D
Comments:1321 - This guy cracks me up. psh, too bad i'm FAILING.. 'just-call-me-tim' is really smart and like researches lasers and stuff. he is a genious but not a teacher. it's hard to ask him questions or for help because he can't really understand us. works examples out of the book leaving us stranded on those insane questions that you always end up getting assigned. I haven't passed a test yet. Partial credit will kick your butt in this class. i don't wanna hate, but i would aim for a different cal teaacher if possible. - Grade In Class:D
Comments:1321 - A nice small asian guy, real funny to hear talk. Too smart for his own good. He is a researcher before he was a teacher and it shows. The guy reads straight out of the book, doesn't teach at all. He doesnt understand english as good as he should and cant understand your question. Good guy. Not a good teacher. Highly unrecommended - Grade In Class:B
