Comments:Geo 1306 - I took 1306 as a minimester course over the winter break (which I wouldn’t recommend). If I were to have to retake it, I’d definitely take it in the actual semester instead as it is SO MUCH information crammed into a short period of time. The class itself is fairly straightforward. Dr. Atchley’s tests are somewhat difficult as the information is incredibly specific. He isn’t looking for an overview, but very specific little points of information. Make sure to take extensive notes. He does offer a decent bit of optional extra credit, which can help your grade. It is a LOT of work- however, I can sing nothing but praise for Dr. Atchley. I got incredibly far behind in this course. I am normally NEVER that kind of student, but I've been dealing with a lot personally within the past few months that came to a head during this time, and I was sick for around a week and a half. By all means, I should have failed this course. Dr. Atchley saw how far behind I was and reached out to me to see if I needed help. When I responded explaining the above without getting into specifics, he extend the course by an ENTIRE DAY which is both incredibly kind and a lot of time when you remember that this was a two week course. When I thanked him for this, he happily responded and welcomed me to visit his office hours and say hi when the semester started back up again! He answered my email at 10pm when my computer crashed during one of my tests, which again, was incredibly kind. By the end of the course, I finished out with a 67 (so a D+) which I would have been more than okay with given the circumstances. Yet, unbeknownst to me at the time, Dr. Atchley raised my grade to a C+ (which literally made me cry haha). I cannot speak highly enough of him. His kindness and generosity is unheard of.  - Grade In Class:C+

Comments:GEO 1306 - I'm honestly so surprised at how bad the other reviews are making him and his class sound. This is one of the easiest science classes you'll take at Baylor. He's lectures absolutely did drag on and were extremely boring- but we are talking about rocks and fossils, I don't think he could've done to make the lessons entertaining. There is a take-home 5 question quiz or two over the lectures every week, there are more concise recorded lectures posted on canvas though, you could just put the 20ish min videos in 2x speed and take the quiz right after. If you go to class tho (which you def should because he takes attendance) he'll highlight on his slides the exact topics the quiz questions will be on. He also has this super long doc full of notes for each lecture. The exams (online, take-home, lockdown browser) are probably the worst part of is class because he has a habit of asking needlessly specific questions, but again if you pay attention to the recorded lectures (more specifically on what he's actually saying not just what's written on the slides) and take notes as well as look at the study guide he provides, you'll be fine. The final exam grade can replace your lowest exam grade. A fair and easy science course if you're not a science/pre-med major but need the credit.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:Geo 1306 - DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE. If you're like me and struggle with tests and prefer assignment based classes, this is not a good course for you. Prof. Atchley assigns two quizzes per week (lockdown) and there are four tests plus a final. The first two tests were relatively okay, as I felt like his lecture slides were accurate to the blank notes he provides you. However, after that his lectures stopped being accurate to the notes and he is sooo quiet and boring and the lectures are long. After the second test I had no idea what to even study for the next tests, even though he gave us a study guide (it was never accurate). The only good thing about this course was the extra credit opportunities he offered. Do not suggest.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:GEO 1306 - DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! I thought this would be an easy class to get the credit that I needed and severely regret it. Dr. Atchly is a very nice guy and fun to talk to outside of class, but his lectures are so boring and it's hard not to fall asleep. The study guides he gives, honestly don't help you study for the exams at all. All in all don't recommend.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:earth through time - DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!!! worst teacher i have ever had. cannot teach for anything. very nice guy tho. makes me want to send him the smallest man who ever lived bc the study guides he gives are so descript an never like what the actual test is about.only redeeming quality is the extra credit but even for you have to watch a 28392839 long video just to find the answers. you could study for 3 days for an exam and still fail because of how in depth the questions are. if i could go back in time and no t take this class i would.  - Grade In Class:D

Comments:1306 - This class was a lot harder than I had thought. My advisor told me this was a blow off class so I took it, and man, it was tough. First off, Dr. Atchley is a great dude. He cares a ton about the material and knows so much about geology that just that alone is fascinating. As a business major, this class wasn't all that interesting, and actually pretty difficult. He has a quiz over every lecture due on Fridays (which typically aren't that difficult) however you MUST study the easter eggs" from the lecture because if you don't, you won't know anything on the lecture quizzes, and these are crucial to your grade. His first two tests I got 95s on, and third and fourth I got below 70s. DO THE EXTRA CREDIT. It is worth more than one whole exam. I literally failed two tests but almost finished with an A- and A because of the massive amount of extra credit. This is a points based class, so try to do everything you can and you will finish with the grade you want - just know, the amount of work you have to do it insane considering this is a class about rocks and the Earth. Fun class. Would I do it again? No. Not the end of the world if you have to take him though..  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:GEO1306 - He is nice, do not get me wrong. But do not take this class. He can not teach and the quizzes and tests do not match what he does teach and they are OVERLY hard. In fact, before the final he said there were questions meant to stump you up. I got 60's-70's on every test. There is a crap ton of extra credit so even with those grades I got an A, but this class was miserable and so hard for no reason.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1306 - I love Dr. Atchley as a person, and he is a great professor. However, as a freshman taking this Intro to Geology class I was a little shocked at the difficulty. It isn't necessarily hard to grasp the concepts, but it is A LOT of material. Most of the time his lectures are interesting, but they can be long at times. The exams are difficult and require a good amount of studying, but it can be manageable. There is a quiz after every lecture, but he offers a ton of extra credit. I was super interested in the content in this class, it was just a little hard to balance the workload of studying with other classes, especially around finals. Again though, he is such a fun professor and is very invested in his students. I loved him, just be warned that this class is not an easy A!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1406 - He is a really good guy, I would really recommend trying to get to know him better. It will honestly make the class so much enjoyable because he actually likes you, so you wont hate him. He really cares about his students, and I would recommend sitting near the front of the class because he is kind of quiet. The class is not going to be easy unless you do all of the extra credit assignments. If you do those and make a B on all of the tests you will get an A in this class!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1406 - I really liked Dr. Atchley\'s class because his knowledge base is huge coming from his career as a petroleum geologist. He has a very dry sense of humor and likes to get to know his students. He is truly one of the best professors I have had at Baylor. However this is not \"rocks for jocks\" (the labs kind of are). You probably ought to a have a real interest in the subject before you take this class. Quizzes and Tests are the most important. There is a lot of material because geology is a unique science. The tests are nothing to blow off and I guess were mostly multiple choice.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:1406 - Here's how it goes down, there is no textbook, everything on the exams comes from the lecture. He will give you an outline of what the lecture covers, and he will talk about some parts a lot, and some parts hardly at all. He is pretty average at lecturing. Quizzes will happen at random whenever he feels moved by the spirit to give one (I'm not making this up, he actually said that). There is extra credit offered, but you'll have to sit through a 2 hour long movie on a Friday afternoon, just to get 40 pts on a 100 pt quiz. The exams are almost all multiple choice, except a few sections that are free response where you must spell everything correctly. If you want to do well, you have to be good at memorization. If you think multiple choice was good, think again. There will be 5 options, plus any combination of the above options, and a 'none of the above' option. I got a 90% on the first exam, but by the third exam I was down to 20%. I'm not good at studying for this type of exam. The lab really saved me in this class. Both because it is 25% of the grade, and because I actually learned things that would be on the exams. If all you want is a 'C', you can probably do it just by attending the lectures and labs, but if you're looking for an easy 'A' this is not it. As a Computer Science student, I found Physics much more appealing.  - Grade In Class:C+

Comments:GEO 1406 - This class is not Cronin's geology. The first two tests are fairly easy. But then the next two tests come. Be prepared to memorize every word Dr. Atchley says because he won't give you any written material as a guide. He gives a ton of material to cover and no review for the tests. Only other grades are the quiz grades and those don't help your grade. However, if you watch geology movies in the BSB on Friday afternoons that will give your quiz grade some extra credit. The lab is an absolute breeze so try to get an 100% in that. Still probably easier than bio or chem, but definitely not as interesting.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:1406 - He's a really great teacher who's passionate about geology. If you can take really awesome notes and do good in lecture environments you'll do good. It's hard to know what will be on the last tests as far as content goes, so make sure you take good notes. I'd recommend  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:GEO 1406 - I say this as a graduating senior, having taken this class as an end degree requirement after having taken over 60 hours of other science courses, that though Dr. Atchley is very excited to teach his students; ultimately, I would not rate him highly nor his course anywhere near my top. The course is arbitrarily filled with unnecessary information that does nothing but litters my notes with pointless factoids that I need to ignore in order to pass exams. Additionally, the lab alongside this course has little to nothing to do with the lecture. I want to highly dissuade anyone who wants to take this course from taking it, unless you REALLY like the idea of geology. Sure, maybe for a freshman who has no idea what they really want to do, this course may be fun, but for everyone else this course is disorganized- I have no idea what I actually "learned" in this course. Sorry, Dr. Atchley, but when Blackboard reviews roll in I hardly have time to worry about them, more less see them when you are the only professor I have on there.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:1406 Earth Through Time - Dr. Atchley is an incredible teacher! I came into the class knowing nothing about geology and I left actually thinking about becomming a geology major! His enthusiasm for his subject is contagious and I was frankly amazed by how he was able to make rocks so absolutely fascinating. I love the format of his lectures, in which students fill in outlines he gives us with the content of his lectures which come not from powerpoints but from his head. Seriously, the amount of information this professor knows is staggering! This is, however, not an easy science credit. It requires a great deal of studying and preparation for exams and quizes. But in the end, it's worth it!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1406 - Although non majors can take this class, this is not a class you can breeze through. Come prepared to pay close attention to his lectures. Sitting up at the front helps because he may be hard to hear in the back. Take notes and do read the book. A lot of test questions come from the book as well as the lecture. Know your time scale and your orogenies. Know the life forms that defined certain periods. He's hard but he's a great teacher, one of the best. He speaks very well and gives great analogies for you to better understand concepts. Take the class seriously and you'll do well! If I could give him a chili pepper, I would.   - Grade In Class:A

Comments:Earth Through Time - Do NOT take this class unless you want to be a geology major. It is hard- Prof Atchley is nice but likes to joke with students- if you cant handle that don't take him. tests-hard Like someone else said quizzes should "help" you but they DO NOT.  - Grade In Class:D

Comments:1406 - Dr Atchley is really great and he has a funny sense of humor. I'm not a geology major, and I still found his class entertaining. No HW. He provides outline-type booklets in which to take notes so you don't miss anything. Weekly quizzes are easy, and he even offers bonus on the quizzes for watching geology videos. The first two tests are extremely easy, and the second two are darned hard. If you know it's coming and prepare accordingly, you will do fine. Take Atchley, he will spark your interest in geology. Also, don't buy the book.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1406 - Don't take him. His 1st two tests are easy, 3rd one's a...and the 4th ones just ok...(the class average on the 3rd test was definitely failing and on the 4th a 69) He doesn't lecture on a student level, he talks to us like were a bunch of geology geniuses...yeah its bout Rocks, but it's definitely not rocks for jocks...Julia the lab TA was pretty good, went a little fast...as for the other TA, she was pretty dumb and never followed his directions when he wasnt in class...the class gets boring really fast...oh and he quizzes randomly to "help" your grade, but in all reality he tries to do it when you're least prepared and it Doesn't help at all. It was my only C...just so u know I'm not dumb or a lazy student. the class is ridiculous  - Grade In Class:C

Comments:1406 - I loved this class!! The lectures varied on fun and boring depending on the topic content. You defiantly need to study for this class, but it's fun and interesting. The first 2 tests are easy, the third one was the hardest, but the fourth one wasn't as bad. Gives quizzes randomly and offers extra credit every once in a while (watching a documentary type video). The lab with Julie was a lot of fun and informative. Just read the lecture notes over and over again and you should do fine in the class.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:1406 - The Earth Through Time was not a class I wanted to take, but ended up being my favorite one. Prof Atchley is not a woman. Don't be thrown off by the name, Stacey Atchley is no woman. He is a great professor who goes over the information very well. I was never bored in the class, even though it was a lecture. The first two tests aren't hard, but the last two are tough. Study in advance. The book hasn't been necessary, so don't get it. The lab with Julia Kahmann was great. I'm not a geology major, but I learned a lot of really interesting stuff in this class. This is not a 'breeze' class, though, but its well worth it!  - Grade In Class:A
