Comments:1303 Mass Coms - If you are registering for classes DROP. If you are midway through the semester DROP. Let me tell you why. This is an ART CREDIT. And all my freshman friends who took it with me had it highly suggested by their advisers. But the issue is it is impossible to get an A. Like literally impossible.
There are so many art credits where the classes are easy A classes with no effort, open note tests, and whatnot. However, it is Korpi's mission to lackadaisically get through the semester recycling the same class format that results in everyone failing both the midterm and final ( the only two tests). This results in him adding a 15-20 point curve because it is the only way he can keep his job. He doesn't care about students' grades or lives, and when reasonable issues are reported, he is lazy and doesn't fix them, because why would he, he's been here forever, and as long as the curve makes the average a passing grade he keeps his job.
I studied my butt off for the final (around 10-13 hours) and I got a 60. But the curve will make it a 75, which gives me a B-. And this is the story of all my classmates and frineds.
Drop, Switch, and do whatever to not get stuck in this class. Take an easy A art credit like art history or something. But whatever you don't take 1303 Korpi - Grade In Class:B |

Comments:1303 - Okay, ehhh my feelings are mixed. People here are complaining about how hard the final was, but it was fine. Yes, there are a lot of concepts, but HE COVERS THEM ALL IN CLASS! Even without studying the book, if you pay decent attention in class, you will retain a lot of the info because a lot of it is interesting, even to me, a person with no interest in FDM. There are lots of memes, funny videos, random clips I thought made the class more entertaining. And if you WANT to,you can make his class enjoyable by being an active listener. My tip to not zone out lectures is to take notes every lecture even though pretty much everyone gives up on taking notes later in the semester. Make yourself be interested, and you'll find that it kind of is. Stay on top of textbook stuff, but this class took FAR less brainspace than these ratings made me believe. About Korpi, he gives off the need to always "wow" us and it usually falls flat. He name drops a lot or shows explicit content for shock value because he likes seeing all of these conservative Baylor kids squirm (and it is funny to see it happening), but is it necessary? No. If you have to take this class, I'm pretty neutral. It's not as hard as people make it. - Grade In Class:A |

Comments:FDM 1303 - I would not recommend this class to anyone. The HW isn't too bad, just a discussion post and 2 responses each week. The textbook that he requires you to buy and work through on your own is extremely unhelpful. I retained absolutely nothing from it, and yet you're expected to know basically ALL of it for the tests, which are 130+ questions. The tests are extremely specific, difficult, and include questions that were about specific videos, examples, people, dates, and topics that may have never been mentioned in class. I would take any other class or any other professor than Korpi. He is pretty cool and has some interesting experience with film, but his class is terrible. Also be prepared to hear him talk about and explain in way too many examples about sexual imagery in advertisements and film... it's gross. - Grade In Class:B+ |

Comments:JOU 1303 - The past few grades are pretty accurate. Whenever I interacted with Korpi, he was helpful and knew what he was talking about. However, there is something wrong with the asynchronous class; the workload is a bit ridiculous for a 1000-level. Not only are you expected to read and take notes on his already meticulous detailed textbook, but you're supposed to watch his weekly lectures, including about an hours worth of random video clips. In a regular class setting it would probably work better, but not in an asynchronous class. Additionally, there are no quizzes, but instead weekly 'Packback' assignments, which are basically Quora/Yahoo questions and answers on FDM-related topics (I didn't mind those but they're definitely not for everyone). However, the worst part were the three tests. I can not stress this enough, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU ARE NOT A CAPABLE TEST-TAKER. There are too many questions (2+ per minute) about too many random topics. Remember those video clips? A good portion of each test is exclusively dedicated to those, with stupid filler questions like 'who is this in this clip' or 'what did this character say.' To give credit where credit is due, the curves are pretty generous, but it's not worth the stress you go through preparing for each test. In the end, I was able to finish this class with an A+, but I spent a disproportionate amount of time for it. If you struggle with self-studying and/or huge tests, avoid this class. - Grade In Class:A |

Comments:1303 - Since I took him this past semester and it was completely online, I understand my view of him as a professor could be skewed, but I'm still going to be honest. The amount of HOURS I spent reading this man's assigned readings and taking notes was RIDICULOUS. The textbook used was great, but SO MUCH INFORMATION. the sections that were expected to be finished on a Tuesday Thursday basis (you didn't have to complete them then, but if you want a good grade you would, or else you'd fall MASSIVELY behind before the exam) were very long and tedious to go through. There's only two midterms/exams before the final, and they're over 100 questions, incredibly detailed random pieces of information, and the highest grade on either test was not above a B (he does curve heavily, which is nice of him considering he said he's never not curved an exam as long as he's taught at Baylor). On top of the readings, the lecture videos and extra video clips usually take an additional 2+ hours per section. It's a very time consuming course, and since I never met him I don't mind the subject and it was fun to learn about, and couldn't tell you if he was nice or not, but overall if you already have a heavy semester please avoid choosing him as your professor. - Grade In Class:A |

Comments:1303 - Dr. Korpi is a very funny and obviously intelligent man. His lectures are always entertaining because he incorporates videos and pop culture that everyone can relate to. He hates cellphone and laptop usage, so do not get on either of these if you're in his line of vision, because he will call you out. The workload was more than necessary for what was supposed to be a relatively "easy" class. Every chapter required online homework that was very time-consuming, and an online quiz. However, these are pretty easy and are meant to boost your grade. The tests are very hard. To do well, you have to actually read the chapters, review the online assignments, and memorize random facts from his lectures that you might not think are important--- like being able to identify what certain scientists look like or meaningless lines from clips that you probably weren't paying attention to. The only upside to these horrible tests is that you can almost always expect a decent curve, since everyone does so poorly on the exams. Right before thanksgiving break, he dropped a quiz and a test grade which was very helpful as well. There were a few extra credit opportunities, so take advantage of those! Overall, the class is entertaining but you definitely have to work hard for an A. - Grade In Class:A |

Comments:1303/Mass Comm - Probably the best advice I can give about this class is to just read the book. Korpi's lectures are almost useless when it comes to preparing for the test, and I found that taking notes was pointless. He offers a ton of extra credit, and although the points may not seem all that much, they really do add up. I made mid-B's and a B+ on my tests and thanks to the extra credit I was able to bump my grade to an A. His TA does take attendance, so make sure you try to go everyday because you do get points off for being absent. A typical day in class is basically just listening to him lecture. You could literally just space out the entire semester, but read the book and do extra credit and you can easily get an A.
The length of the chapters, however, are quite long. It actually does take a good amount of work to study for his tests. (each chapter is 30+ pages long and each test has about 4 chapters)
You can also tell that he is quite liberal when it comes to his lectures (well compared to other Baylor profs). So if you're uncomfortable with that, then I wouldn't advise you take him. For me, though, I really enjoyed his lectures and I liked how liberal he was. In fact, out of my two and a half years at Baylor, I think he is my favorite professor when it comes to his lectures.
Anyways, go to class, read the book, do the extra credit, and you'll be fine! - Grade In Class:A |

Comments:1304 - Korpi is a very intimidating man. As such, I avoided extended interaction with him. I had a Tuesday-Thursday class, and he gave a quiz literally every day. at the beginning of the semester, he said that they improved overall grades and that's why he was giving so many. They were only 2-5 questions each, however, and 10 total questions. So on a given day there would be three real questions with seven blank questions that he would tell you the answer to (i.e. "true" or "A"), so you were always guaranteed an okay grade on the quizzes. Everything he said in class was straight from the reading, so if you did the reading well to prepare for the quiz, class wasn't too thrilling. BUT, he did show a lot of video clips to illustrate book concepts. He also offered A LOT of extra credit. Random things in the FDM department, movie reviews every Thursday, cute sneezes, cool hats, buying a game at the midnight release, dancing to Gangnam Style, etc. So it's easy to make an A, but he is a scary man. Also, there are three tests throughout the semester plus the final, which have 60-75 questions and 100 questions, respectively. - Grade In Class:A |

Comments:Intro to Mass Comm - When you read the ratings that say nothing from class is on the test, that's one hundred percent true. Know that when you take Korpi, the classes will be interesting, but you will be teaching the test material to yourself. The tests are completely based on the chapters from the text book, so there's no way to get around buying it for this class. There are three tests and a final, all weighted equally, and an attendance and participation grade. He offers so much extra credit, it's in sane. TAKE ADVANTAGE!! Every movie you go see is 3 extra credit points if you turn in your stub. Don't leave this for the last day of class because I promise it's worth it. To study for the tests, read the chapters and take notes. Take special attention to trends, like whether a certain type of media is increasing or decreasing. A lot of the material, you will know becuase technology is not a mystery to us. But, I will say that the tests are actually hard. He does curve, but I barely got an A in the course. That's where the extra credit comes into play - do it or risk getting a lower grade in an easy class. Korpi has fun classes - you just watch videos the whole time. - Grade In Class:A |

Comments:Anime - I didn't take Korpi for Mass Comm like everyone else on the page, but I did take his Anime class in the summer and LOVED it. It's a shame Korpi doesn't teach more upper-level film stuff because this class was an absolute blast. If it's offered again, I definitely recommend taking it--even if you're not a huge anime fan. There are screenings every day (most of which were from student presentations, which ranged from Miyazaki films to Initial D to Ah! My Goddess--a little bit of everything, really) which can last a while, but never lasted later than, gosh, 5:30? for a class that started at 1:30?, I think. He had a lot of passion and interest in the subject and has a great sense of humor about all of it. He's pretty easy to reach either in his office or via e-mail (though sometimes you have to send a couple e-mails because he's got those huge intro classes to deal with, too). I still bother him about random crap from time to time because he's just a cool guy. Our grades came from the daily blogs about the screenings, a final essay exam, and a day where you pretty much teach the class about an anime in a big long presentation, and he grades fairly leniently (I say this because I'm VERY nervous giving presentations, but did fine anyway) but fairly. Do the work, show up to class, and it's not hard to make an A. - Grade In Class:A |

Comments:1303 - I took this course Honors so it was a bit more work. If you don't take this class Honors, then it's basically a lecture class, where your only grades come from the test. For Honors, the extra work is not exactly light, but it's definitely doable. You're asked to write a few movie reviews, and the movie list is a really good list. A lot of my taste in movies comes from watching movies from that list, so it's definitely worth it. You also do a book comparison towards the end of the semester. It's significantly longer than the film reviews, so don't procrastinate on that one! The TA for the course is really cool--really lenient and approachable as well. Korpi's lectures consist of lots of video clips, which was fun, and you get to study topics like recorded music and radio. The tests are difficult though--they're very detailed multiple choice/true or false, and most of the questions come from the book..so read the book! If you don't do so hot on the tests though, don't panic. He always curves the test grades, and there are so many opportunities for extra credit. Go to the extra credit movie screenings! Great and easy way to make extra points. All in all, I'd recommend taking this class, with Dr. Korpi--you'll learn a lot for sure. - Grade In Class:B |

Comments:Mass Comm 1303 - Before I move on to my eruption, I will start out with praise. Korpi is a good man. I like his cynical personality and humorous clips. I can honestly say that I looked forward to each day’s lecture, waiting for some new form of entertainment to keep me interested. I loved the information he taught during the lectures, and was constantly impressed with Korpi’s role in the media. Yet for all his good qualities, something about this course, not Korpi, bothered me: The correlation between his tests and his lectures. On his first test I noticed two questions out of seventy that were related with the lectures; on the second, an impressive eight out of sixty-five, and on the third, none. And the final just repeated most of the questions on the tests with some new information. In other words his lectures have near to NOTHING to do with the tests. I made the mistake of dividing my study attention on the first test 50% to the lectures and 50% to the book. Only study the book. Study it well. The questions on the test are UTTERLY specific. They rarely ask concepts, but only specific details in the book. Read the syllabus: “Any and all material in the text is fair game for an examination question.” This is so true. He curves each test by about 15 points and you will need them. Failing without the curve is quite common. He offers tons of extra credit that can easily make someone make an A. I unfortunately am not allowed to watch ‘R’ rated movies (yeah I know I am really conservative) and most of the extra credit films are rated ‘R’. As for movies in the movie theater, he picks movies he likes, and not all movies, despite his claim that all media consists of “studying” for his class. The class is terrible, but the professor is good. I am only sore over his class mainly due to the fact that I lost my 4.0 GPA, not to math/physics/biology/chemistry/or even computer science, but to an introductory course in Mass Communication. - Grade In Class:B+ |

Comments:Intro to Mass Comm. - Dr.Korpi is funny, down to earth, and very clear on guidelines for the class. The lectures are entertaining, with a lot of video/movie clips, etc. No homework, except for the 9 essays throughout the course- which are SO easy to make 100's on, all you have to do is make sure you answer every question in the prompt. The tests are rough, but he curves them almost 30 points every time. Be sure to read the textbook, because 90% of the test questions are from there, the other 10% from the lectures. Take this course if you can, it's not too hard and it's very interesting! - Grade In Class:A |

Comments:CST 1303 - Korpi was a great professor, and his class was really a great experience. Classes were mainly filled with watching film clips, commercials, music videos, etc. that related to the topic of discussion. Korpi really found ways to make the material interesting, and I enjoyed going to his class every time it met. He also has some very entertaining stories that he shared with us!
There were never any quizzes, but there were nine essays due at various points during the semester. These essays were only 400 words, though, and very easy to complete. The tests (which were multiple choice and true/false) were primarily from the textbook material, with very little coming from the lectures. However, I did not find the tests difficult, and I think as long as you read the assigned material and understand it you will be fine. In addition, he curves the tests tremendously, which helps alot. There are also many extra credit opportunities which range from extra credit film showings to playing a computer game called The Movies to attending lectures from guest speakers.
I would say that it is easy to do well in this class, but be advised that you do have to read the textbook material in order to do so. Overall, Korpi's class was a fun experience, and I found him to be a great and entertaining professor. I would recommend both him and this class to anyone. - Grade In Class:A |

Comments:intro to mass comm. - korpi is so cool. his class is interesting, sometimes fun. tests are pretty hard. 98% of it covers the reading so if you read, you get an A, guarunteed. at least read the summaries for every chapter. there are like 8 essays due during the course which are easy, just write like 400+ words, or about a page, that answers the question and youll be fine. he counts off if you miss class, so go, sleep during class, read (skim over) most of the chapters, do the essays, easy A. take this man for mass comm. - Grade In Class:A |

Comments:1301 - I love Dr. Korpi! This is a great class to take, but, like others have said, it's not completely a blow-off class. His lectures are usually very interesting (always spiced up with video clips and sometimes Jump5 music videos), but don't bother taking notes in class - just listen. The tests cover mostly material from Sight, Sound, and Motion, so make sure you at least skim the chapters and read the summaries. Some questions will come from Media Now, so learn vocab. words and read the summaries there. All of my test grades were curved from the 70s to the high 80s or 90s, so don't worry that you've failed miserably after you take the first test - you probably did much better than you thought. There are 8 essays you have to write throughout the semester, and it probably depends on the grad. student grading them as to how long and how knowledgeable they need to be. I received full points for essays from 450-700 words. Do all the extra credit you can - it's not hard, and it helps a lot! Come to class, because you lose 4 points (out of 1000 total) each day you miss. Korpi's great - head of the Telecommunication division - take him! - Grade In Class:A |

Comments:Intro to mass comm - I will say this about the class, you will never have another one like it. Class is very two-faced. Half of the time you will watch movies, music videos (of the little group of encouragable scamps "Jump 5"...i pray they are hit by a bus) and lots of random japanese things, and the other half is him droning on about the important of light angles in a shot or something that will cause you and the rest of the 200 some odd people in your class...to fall asleep. It can be super interesting or super boring, never in between. But many classes are super boring, and never super interesting, so Korpi has a leg up on most other teachers in that regard. He gives such little homework that if you dont complete, you are just silly. Quick little writing assignments that most often I copied from other papers i had written and had nothing to do with the topic, posted on his web form thingy and got full credit. SO EASY. Dont miss out on those points. His tests are pretty freakin' hard, but not to worry, he curves like no man I've ever seen, like 25-30 pt. curves. It was wonderful, you see you get a 65 on a test, get all bummed, then u check the adjusted score and now you have a B+, aint nothing wrong with that. I loved the class and its a baylor institution, gotta take Dr. Korpi man, keepin' it real since his days at Liberty University. He most def. will be jailed before I graduate, so I'm glad I took him when I did. - Grade In Class:B+ |
