Comments:ENG 3372 - Dr. Wood is one of Baylor's gems as far as teaching goes. He's very knowledgeable about the subject and passionate about teaching. With that being said, this class was by far the most intimidating and overwhelming course I've taken at Baylor. The heavy reading load is understandable but the tests are ridiculous. He's not the type that wants you to articulate your understanding of a text, he wants you to regurgitate what he says in class and expound on it. This can be difficult seeing that he tends to get off track in class quite a bit. In summary, prepare to read for this class every single night, expect to have any essay you write for him ripped to shreds, and unless you're an honors student or a person with a lot of background in this stuff, expect your GPA to suffer. - Grade In Class:C+
Comments:GTX 2302 - Dr. Wood is one of the BEST professors at Baylor. When I talked to other people before I took the class, they only told me that "he's too opinionated" or "he takes himself too seriously." Nothing could be more inaccurate. Dr. Wood is opinionated, but that does not prevent him from teaching students more than they would learn from pretty much any professor at Baylor. It is true, you will know at the end of class what Dr. Wood thinks. Why? Because Dr. Wood has spent his entire life thinking about these questions. Secondly, Dr. Wood does not "take himself too seriously," rather he takes what he teaches seriously. The things that he teaches mean a lot to him. PRO TIP: If you want to succeed with Dr. Wood, GO TO OFFICE HOURS. If you put in the effort to get to know him, he WILL reward you for it. At the very least, you will come to understand one of the most accessible theologians alive today. Know that his classes will require a lot of work, but if you're ready to put in the time (you really have to put in the time, because if you do not, it won't be good for you) then there is no better decision to make. TAKE DR. WOOD. - Grade In Class:B
Comments:Christian Literary - Dr. Wood is one of the smartest profs on campus, but if you don't agree with him, be very careful about taking one of his classes. While I believe he truly cares about his students and wants them to learn, if he disagrees with you on an opinion (especially on something that has a grade attached to it), you will be very sorry that you voiced it. In class he has openly laughed at several students for saying something he found stupid, especially beliefs he "grew out of" himself. If you want to take his class, be sure you ask him what he is looking for, especially in the paper, because if you don't and you get it wrong, your grade will take a HUGE hit. And if you don't ask, he certainly won't tell you. - Grade In Class:B+
Comments:Christian Lit Classics - Dr. Wood is probably the smartest man I have ever met. That can be extremely intimidating, because he demands excellence from his class. Then I hated it, now I think every professor should. I didn't always give my best and sometimes it was pretty embarrassing. I am not saying this to scare you away from taking his class. I am saying if you want to be challenged and learn something crucial to your faith, take this class. He is an extremely kind man and though the class will be tough, you won't regret what you learn. - Grade In Class:B
Comments:Oxford Christians - Dr. Wood is a very difficult professor, but it is absolutely worth it. He is funny and has a passion that you learn. One of the most fascinating classes I've ever been in. He cares deeply about his students and wants them to learn the most they can, but it's not about knowing for a test, it's about knowing so that you can be a better and more educated person. Loved discussing with him in class and having great class discussion on amazing texts. Definitely one of the gems that Baylor has! If you have a chance to take his class, please do. His wealth of knowledge is incredible - Grade In Class:A
Comments:ENG 3372 - Dr. Wood is a very well-read professor with a decent sense of humor and a thorough knowledge of Christianity. That said, he does play favorites, and his workload is insane. We covered more than 2,500 pages for his Oxford Christians class (and yes, the final is cumulative). He underestimates his ability to get off track in lectures (often on personal intellectual crusades), so he almost never gets through the material he says he will. The midterm and final consist of terms, quote identifications (including blanks to fill), and an essay. He grades papers more critically than any other professor I've had; in all seriousness, term papers that get published are not always enough to earn an A (there was only one in this class) or even an A- from Dr. Wood. This is because he takes his students seriously, although he won't always read the citations in your paper to make sure his criticism is correct. The texts we read were worth the work, and Dr. Wood is a great teacher, but be prepared to lower your GPA. - Grade In Class:B
Comments:GTX 3331 - The course had a presentation, midterm, paper, class participation, and a final. We were never told what our grades were for the presentation and class participation. Our papers were put outside of his office at some point the day before the final. (Another student got the word out. He never emailed us about it.) He knows a lot of information about theology. I enjoyed some of the people we read during the course. He loved to ask questions based on our prior knowledge. So, the course isn't the easiest for someone who doesn't have that background. My problem with Wood is that he seemed way too interested in individual's racial identity. - Grade In Class:C+
Comments:Oxford Christian ENG 3372 - I did not like his teaching style, and did not get a whole lot out of the class because of it. He did not seem to encourage a whole lot of open discussion in the class; instead, he had prearranged questions with a precise answer in mind. He was on a mission to call on every student at least once a day to answer a question, and if you didn’t give the exact answer he was looking for…then you were simply wrong. I found him intimidating and the entire class always seemed uptight. Extremely opinionated, and I did not always agree with him. - Grade In Class:C
Comments:Heritage - I did well in his class, and looking back, I learned alot more than I thought I did. My biggest problem was his teaching style - He operates on the shock value method, and states ideas in their most extreme and exasperating way. I agreed with about half of what he said, but he stated everything with such tactlessness that he made me want to disagree with everything he said. If you have any opinions of your own before entering his class, he'll either make you change them or rub you the wrong way for the whole semester. You'll learn alot, but take what he says with a grain of salt. He takes himself way too seriously as well. - Grade In Class:C+
Comments:Christian Classics - Dr. Wood is opinionated, knowledgable, and an excellent teacher. His lectures are informative and interesting, and he is passionate about getting his students to understand what they read. And Dr. Wood is NOT a right-wing Republican. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1350 - Dr. Wood is an amazing teacher who really challenges his students. I do not agree with all of his theology, but I did learn a lot from him. Take him! - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1350 - Dr. Wood's class is very different from most...I think anyway. He does call on you in class so you better be prepared to come up with something...even if it is the wrong answer. Quizzes are pretty nasty because they are just random quotes out of nowhere. Tests are all definition and literal meanings and quotes...really long quiotes. Don't try to memorize them because there are just too many. I strongly recommend that you stay away! - Grade In Class:C
Comments:1350 - Extremely opinionated and right wing Republican.. tells you how you should think, and that you are a bad person if you don't agree with him. Majority of class was spent arguing with him on his views of what it is to be a Christian. Tons of reading for this class, quizzes are crap.. you can read 200 pages and understand the content, but then he opens a page, finds a quote, and you have to fill in the word he omits from the quote.. Tests consist of identification and tons of quotes. Big participation in this class... he calls on everyone at least 2x a day. Only good thing about this class is his graduate student TA, Mr. Hollon. Mr. H would teach on a regular basis, that is the only time I would actually learn something.. I don't reccommend Dr. Wood as a teacher at all. - Grade In Class:B
Comments:4388 - Dr. Wood is an amazing professor. He requires the utmost in every student, but he treats each studen with the utmost respect. His workload can be long during the semester. He inspires! - Grade In Class:A
