Comments:ECO 3305 - Short Review: I hated this class so much - I thought it was uninteresting and did not like the way Dr. VanHoose taught. Took this class as a senior after accepting a full-time commercial banking offer with the thought this class would be right up my alley and super helpful for my career. A lot of people say they learn a lot from him so maybe Im the problem, but I just did not learn much nor did I enjoy it despite my career choice being pretty relevant to the course material. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:4333 - Dr. Vanhoose is the most insanely talented professor I have ever had. As an economics major, I leaned more than any other econ class by taking him. On the other side, I never had more work during the take home exams than I did with him. Each exam was a gauntlet, and I had to understand the subject matter perfectly to do well. Overall, Dr. Vanhoose was the best professor I have ever had at Baylor, but the time it took to complete exams left me with an average of 2 hours of sleep over the course of 3 day periods. Ultimately, Dr. Vanhoose is worth it because you will learn more than any other professor by taking him, regardless of the exam time. Understanding economics is not an easy task, especially foreign exchange markets, but Dr. Vanhoose made it very clear what the expectations were and how to meet them. There isn’t a professor in the entire Econ department who can force you to understand economics better than he can. Anyways, I’m taking him again for his final semester at Baylor because I enjoyed him so much. Take him if you have the chance! - Grade In Class:A
Comments:3305 - This class was extremely informational heavy, and the only grades are the take home exams that we are given every 2 weeks or so. They can be very tough if you do not understand the material and will take hours to complete...Dr. VanHoose is a nice man but the class is just hard, so prepare yourself for that before you sign up. I barely passed with a C but I passed so pretty thankful I did at least. - Grade In Class:C
Comments:3305 - Dr. Vanhoose seems like he gets a lot of harsh ratings, but I feel like these are unwarranted. This class is hard work and there is quite a bit of material covered each class. If you don't read the book or review your notes everyday, you will not do well. That said, I am so thankful I took this class! Vanhoose was always available to answer my questions and very understanding and kind when I had a hard time with concepts. I came out of the class feeling as if I actually learned usable material that I will be able to reference in the future. There are only 5 quizzes, 3 tests, and a final and he drops your lowest grades. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:Money and Banking - This class is hard no way around it. Don't take it if you aren't prepared for that. That being said, it was my favorite econ class I took a Baylor. You learn an unreal amount of interesting, practical information that help in a multitude of other finance and econ classes. Class is at 8:00am only, and you can't miss because of the insane amount of material he covers each lecture. I think VanHoose has an unfairly low rating on here from people who put forth little effort and expect to do well. He gives great, interesting lectures, and really knows his stuff. He can be harsh if you stop class to ask stupid questions, but is so helpful if you go into his office hours. Tests are all free response and he demands a lot from his students, but every test/quiz is doable. The quizzes are probably the hardest part of the class, but the tests are much easier to study for as they are just repeats of the quiz questions. I truly believe that this class is a must for those who are actually willing to work hard, and have a desire to learn about monetary and fiscal policy. Class also covers interesting topics about banking, as well as the 2009 recession and its causes. Overall, if you're willing to put in the work, I would for sure recommend this class and VanHoose. - Grade In Class:B+
Comments:3305 - Honestly I don't know why Dr. VanHoose gets such a bad rap. His class is tough but he's extremely knowledgeable about the subject and is always available in office hours. The tests are very similar to the homework so you know what to expect. He also prints off the textbook so you don't have to buy it! Overall, though class, but VanHoose makes it much more bearable. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:3305 - He is very helpful in office hours, and his exams are exactly like the homeworks and quizzes. He is very knowledgeable about the subject, and is willing to provide advice extraneous to the class even after you've finished his course. Plus, the Keynesian Flow diagram was some nice and easy free points. Only reason I didn't get an A is I didn't study for two of the exams. - Grade In Class:B+
Comments:Money and Banking - My class started with around 25 students enrolled and finished with 11. I genuinely enjoyed the material, and Vanhoose knows it inside and out, but this course is unnecessarily difficult. You will learn an unbelievable amount, but you will spend more time learning the material than you will on all of your other classes combined, and it will probably hurt your performance in other classes because it is such a massive time commitment. For the sake of your GPA and sanity, take intermediate macro (or at least register for both and drop one after you've gotten a feel for each). - Grade In Class:C
Comments:3305 Money and Banking - Dr. Vanhoose is definitely a tight grader, but honestly, he\'s by far one of the best professors I have had at Baylor. The textbook (which he hands you in class) is great. You must read it and comprehend it to do well in the class. Attend all lectures to solidify your understanding of the material covered in the text and you\'ll do just fine in the class. There are a few homeworks, but they\'re not difficult by any means. He gives you everything you need to know to do well, so follow his instructions and I promise it will go smoothly. If you\'re looking for a class where you can learn A LOT about the Fed\'s influence on fiscal/monetary policy and its impact on the banking industry and the economy as a whole - take this class! It\'s good information. - Grade In Class:B+
Comments:Money and Banking - Positives: VanHoose is an expert in money and banking. He is clearly passionate and knowledgeable about the material. That makes the class interesting. You will learn a great deal from this course. Negatives: VanHoose is a picky grader, and unnecessarily proud of giving low grades. He can be mean to people that ask dumb questions during class. He rambles and tells too many stories, which is really a waste of precious class time. Strategy: Work and rework all the homework and quizzes, he often repeats questions on the exams and finals. Anything he draws on the board is fair game. The tests are very long, so be prepared to write quickly. Overall: You will learn a great deal but at great cost. - Grade In Class:B
Comments:Eco 2306 - Professor Van Hoose is a rude, belittling, irrational, and vague professor. I love economics as a subject but absolutely hated every second of Professor Van Hoose's class. Also, he gets very upset when a student doesn't spell a word correctly, capitalize a word, or use an apostrophe correctly. His tests and homework assignments are all written-response. Oh yeah, he WILL take points off for grammatical errors on tests. RIDICULOUS! My advice would be to find another professor! - Grade In Class:B
Comments:2306 - 不选VanHoose 绝对是遗憾,非常棒!但是难度高!中国式学习法对于这门课很有帮助!不要怕,不要慌,选他是你最好的决定!!!lol - Grade In Class:B+
Comments:Foreign Exchange Markets - HE IS A NIGHTMARE. DO NOT TAKE HIM PLEASE LISTEN TO ME DO NOT TAKE HIM. - Grade In Class:F
Comments:4319 - (Economics of Regulation) Dr. VanHoose's classes are difficult, no doubt, but he's very clear about what he expects, and he gives you what you need to do well. I nearly dropped the class after the first quiz because I hadn't prepared nearly enough for it, but after that I really enjoyed learning about analyzing market competition and the effects of regulatory policy. He drops at least one quiz and one test, an 88 is an A, so there is some room for error. Attendance is really important; in our class he added 4% to the final average of anyone with one absence or less. I don't think we ever had to turn in homework, although he will get upset if it's clear that no one did the reading. To do well, copy down everything he writes on the board. If you draw and label the graphs correctly, show your work for calculations, and explain what formulas or graphs mean in English, you can get a good grade. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:Money and Banking - I never rate professors on bu books, but I feel like I should rate Dr. VanHoose so those interested in taking a class of his will think twice. Professor VanHoose, in the nicest way possible, is by far the worst teacher I have ever had in my student career. He is very rude and unhelpful. If you miss class, even once, its game over. He crams more junk into each lecture than you could ever think possible. In a 50 minute class, he will cover around 12 completely independent topics (that you must memorize for each quiz and test) with fully labeled graphs (50 minutes/ 12 topics = new topic every 4 minutes.) At first glance, the notes you take in class seem to be helpful - but when test time comes around, he expects you to infer an explanation comparable to a 20 page research paper from a 3 word sentence in your notes. Now for his grading. Dr. VanHoose is PICKY when it comes to grades! Quizzes are 50 points, often 2 questions, and each one counts for 10% of the course grade. On one quiz question, I wrote a perfect two page explanation, fully labeled graph, and a derived equation. I accidently mislabeled one variable in the equation "R" instead of "r". I realized this mistake, but since I wrote in pen, I couldn't change it. So I wrote out to the side that it should be a lowercase r instead of uppercase R. When I got the paper back, he ignored my explanation, graph, and side note - circled the R and gave me 4 out of a possible 25 points for the problem, causing me to fail the quiz. Funny how mislabeling R to r will cause you to lose 5% of the entire course grade... what a joke. Even if you do manage to get the economics to his satisfaction on tests, he will start taking points of for random crap like grammar, spelling, punctuation, messy handwriting, etc. His entire class is graded subjectively with essay questions. There are no True/False, Multiple Choice, etc - only essay. He WILL NOT hesitate to fail you. All I can say is good luck, you are definitely going to need it... - Grade In Class:C
Comments:macro - Van Hoose is a rude jerk who does not respect his students. that being said, he knows his stuff and is clear about his very high expectations. absoloutely no homework, projects or other nonsense in his class which was a big plus. Dont blow off the quizzes theyre basically mini-tests. READ THE BOOK!! tests all short answer, no multiple choice or t/f ever. TAKE GOOD NOTES just copy exactly what he writes on the board. and for goodness sake never raise your hand or ask a question he will almost always make you feel stupid. keep your head down and always go to class...DONT BE LATE he gets sooo irritated. oh also, it helps to be a pretty girl. - Grade In Class:B
Comments:eco 2307 - RUN FOR YOUR LIFE. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. VanHoose is cranky, extremely set in his ancient ways, and rude to his students. Don't you dare accidentally sit in the wrong seat or you will be publically embarassed. Will not allow use of even a 4 function calculator at all, even in complex and cumbersome equations. EXTREMELY picky grader, will knock points off for anything that he can find. Didn't write out your math problem in a complete sentence? FAIL. Didnt show every single step of your work, exactly how he wanted it? FAIL. Do whatever you can to avoid this class. - Grade In Class:DROP
Comments:ECO 4320 - VanHoose is a VERY pick professor. If economics does not come naturally to you, or if you have trouble remembering small details, I'd recommend taking another professor. I feel pretty comfortable with economic concepts, but I tended to lost points on his tests, which are compeltely short answer, for subjective semantic reasons, despite having the correct answer. If you take VanHoose, remember to GO to class, and cater to exactly what he says he wants on the tests. - Grade In Class:B
Comments:3307 - You need to take Intermediate Macroeconomics? Dont take Vanhoose, wait until Dr. Green teaches it and get into his class. This was supposed to be my last semester at Baylor, all I needed to make was a 48% on my final to GRADUATE.. guess what ole vanhoosey does? screws me out of all the points I deserved on the exam. PICKY PICKY PICKY!!! If you label 1 thing wrong on a graph, its -25 pts. Hes never around for you to ask him questions in his office and when he is, he always cops out of every question you ask him by replying "if you paid attention in class you would know that." Very heartless professor, does not care about his students.. absolutely the worst professor I have ever met in my entire life. You're never motivated to study for his class because of the above facts. Stay away everyone, Im really trying to help you guys out. - Grade In Class:F
Comments:ECO 5333 - Class structure: very well outlined class structure. From the beginning you know what will be covered and he doesn't stray from that much. Teaching style: absolutely no class involvement. He reads from notes and writes on the board. Tests: You figure out after the first test what he wants. Just be prepared to adapt. He grades VERY picky! Papers: extremely subjective based on how smart he thinks you are and if he likes you His demeanor: in class, he's an absolute a-hole. Outside of class, he's not so bad - not very helpful either though. - Grade In Class:B
Comments:4333 - He writes on the chalkboard straight from an outline, all you can do is try to keep up with him. Outside of class he's a nice guy, but cross him in class and he'll bury you. - Grade In Class:C
Comments:4327 - really knows his stuff, but watching paint dry is alot more fun. if understanding escapes you, and it will, he will explain until the light turns on. study your butt off and don't take him after a heavy lunch. esp on a tues-thurs. big no-no. recommend ONLY for economics majors. don't even THINK about this class as an upper level elective. there are better things to waste your money on. - Grade In Class:C
