Comments:1300 - I took this course online because I did not want to go into the classroom every day. What was supposed to be an easy online class became my worst nightmare. There is no reason for a 1000-level required class to be this difficult. There are reading reflections and lecture refections due every week which are not too difficult if you know EXACTLY what she is looking for. Also, her tests are only short answers/essays - there is no multiple choice. I would not recommend taking this class to anyone because what is supposed to help you GPA just ends up hurting it. - Grade In Class:B
Comments:HIS1300 - To put it simply, Professor Lopez is a very knowledgeable teacher, but because she's trying to cover a ton of content in 50 minutes, things don't go so well. Besides test days, all her classes are mostly lecture-based, and she'll read from a powerpoint. It's very important to be able to hear her during class because the slides don't have all the information you need, since quite a bit of it will come from her mouth, and she repeats important information. It's like watching an educational video without being able to stop or rewind it (she'll automatically move on if you pause her too much, and realistically, we can't cover everything if everyone bothered to ask her to stop every time someone missed a sentence or two) and because she doesn't allow the use of electronics (even to take notes), you're spending the entirety of the class furiously scribbling down notes & going through hand cramps if you're me. She's a very nice lady though who is more than happy to talk to you outside of class & is very helpful if you need help (besides if you don't have the notes) for test prep & reviewing your essays. She's a very idealistic person who loves student interaction in the classroom, so she'll ask questions during the lecture, which is your chance to catch up on notes (based on what your mind can happen to remember) & if you missed class, she'll tell you to borrow notes from a friend in her efforts to make students talk to each other more. If there's anything you ABSOLUTELY SHOULDN'T MISS, it's her test reviews that happen outside of class since she'll literally tell you how to pass & she has a specific method of writing short answers that she likes. About her workload though... it's a lot but it can be between 1 page and 10+ pages before every class. And it's important to always do it since she has random open-note quizzes that want very specific answers. Her tests are very heavy on the essay side (NO MULTIPLE CHOICE), and honestly, I feel like other history professors would struggle to get a perfect 100 on it (mostly due to the time constraint and short answer requirements; the final was way easier than any test IMO because we spent the last class reviewing & we had a lot longer to spend on every question). So, in summary, she's not a bad teacher in the sense that she doesn't want the best for her students/can't teach/isn't available, but the type of class she's going for (one where everyone likes talking to each other; you don't want her if you have crazy social anxiety)(a high-level history course with relatively strict grading w/ heavy content both content-wise & how-much-you-write-wise). This specific course focuses on a variety of different topics (ex: food, music, etc.), and idk what Professor Lopez's is, but if I had to make a guess, I'd say it's "controversial stuff" or "the touchy stuff" because we learned about slavery, how minorities/poor are oppressed, feminism, civil rights, WW2, and basically THAT sorta stuff from history and only those, which can be very sad to read about all the time. There's also an assigned reading, which is actually a pretty good read, and you have to do a book essay on it in class. I don't really have any tips for the class except to do the homework & attend the test reviews. - Grade In Class:B
Comments:HIS 1300 - Dr. Lopez is one of the sweetest people I have ever met and she genuinely cares about her students! She is seriously one of the nicest most caring people I have ever met, however, she teaches at a relatively fast pace and it can be hard to write notes. There is a ton of note taking in this course and when it comes to exams, the amount of information you are expected to remember is a bit much. I spent hours and hours studying for these exams and still only made B's on them. They are pretty difficult tests, but I would 100% recommend going to her study sessions before each test and she practically tells you what to study and what will be on the exam. The amount you have to remember though is kinda crazy. I recommend taking Dr. Lopez as she was my favorite professor I had this year, but be prepared for quite a bit of work when it comes to exam time!!! - Grade In Class:B+
Comments:HIS 1300 - She was a nice professor, engaged with the class, however she was an unnecessarily tough grader for exams and she was very strict about having no technology in the class, so if you like taking notes on a computer or ipad, i don't recommend her. She'll also randomly have pop quizzes but they're open notes and mostly based on the readings she assigns for class. - Grade In Class:C
Comments:HIS 1300 - She is a very good lecturer but has a no technology policy which can be frustrating when taking notes. Her lecture move at a rather quick pace, but overall a very good professor. Her test can be unreasonable with her expectations, hopefully she will revise the format. This semester she allowed test corrections for half credit back. Overall not the worst experience overall. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:48451 - The content is not difficult, but the extent to which you will be required to retain it is at an unreasonable expectation for a general core class. Always do the readings and take good notes because every graded assignment, quiz, or test will be entirely written. Also, be sure to answer questions in class because you will earn brownie points. All that said She is a very nice person who will care about your life. - Grade In Class:B+
