*A 5 star workload is an easy workload; a 3 star is average; whereas a 1 star workload is extremely hard.
Comments:1101 - Took this class, failed both exams. I asked for help, and she wasn't super helpful before tests. The homework problems do not correlate with her exam questions at all. - Grade In Class:DROP
Comments:chem 1301 - I didn't love Dr. Mercado's class, but from what I've heard she's a lot better than most of the other chem professors. She teaches off of powerpoint, the class is mostly 4 exams and a final along with Aktiv and Tophat homework. The homework doesn't count for much but it will help you understand the material so much better if you take the time to work through it. Exams are straight forward and all questions follow the learning objectives she gives you. She said there would be no extra credit, but ended up giving us 2 extra credit assignments at the end of the course. She gets confused sometimes when kids ask her questions but I think she did alright explaining the material. Overall not awful, I would probably take her again. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:4225 - Biophys. Lab: Dr. Mercado is a very competent lecture and knows what she is talking about, so most of my complaints have to do with the class itself and how it's structured rather than her teaching ability. There is only one lecture section and it's on Mondays at 8 AM, which is the worst possible time if you want to retain anything (not her fault, and she makes it very clear that she'll change it the second she gets the chance). While the material covered in the lecture is interesting, the labs themselves are more about pressing the right buttons in the right order, so you don't actually learn much, and the machines don't even work right half of the time so good luck getting usable data. The lab manual is inconsistently written and often unclear about what to include in the lab reports (which account for 70% of your overall grade), and the formatting instructions can be outright contradictory at times. Add to that the fact that the TAs wait until the last few weeks (I only had 2 grades in before the last week of the semester) to grade the lab reports so you're riding blind for the first 4-5 reports with no idea if you're formatting correctly or including the right things. My only real problem with Dr. Mercado herself is that she grades pretty arbitrarily on the pre-labs and takes off points for seemingly random things, but other than that she is very helpful and a very sweet person outside of class who clearly cares for her students. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:Chemistry - Dr, Mercado Is an amazing professor I would strongly recommend her to anyone wanting to take Chem1, I think she is an excellent teacher, and she is always willing to help out her students and answer whatever questions they have about the class, homework problems, or what you got wrong on a test and why. The workload is slightly above average but it's not hard. I was very fortunate to take Dr. Mercado and would strongly recommend her to anyone wanting to take chem1. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:Chem 1301 - Great God bearing woman, her teachability lacks. Her slides are similar to the top-hat, which is helpful until there is something lacking. When something is lacking, there is no further help even when you get the question incorrect. I also feel that there is a significant lack of practice material without the SI. The Aktiv homework is helpful, but only to an extent, and not all of the material on the exams is on the Aktiv. I recommend searching for another teacher unless you attend the SI for every session and have a complete understanding of each chapter. There is also no curve on any of the exams, regardless of the class average. Please do yourself a favor, and study the SI and the Top-Hat as thoroughly possible. - Grade In Class:C
Comments:CHE1301 - Dr. Mercado is an amazing professor. Probably the most talented lecturer I have ever had. The class consists of 4 regular exams, in-textbook questions, homework for each chapter, and a final. She does a great job in connecting chemistry topics to real-life things and explains why things work in the way that they do--which made the class quite interesting. Additionally she is super caring, she will work hard to accommodate students if an exam is scheduled on a day that conflicts with many peoples schedules. Her tests are very fair, and the questions are similar to the example problems she works through during class. She also has about 3 bonus questions on each exam which is nice. She does a good job in emphasizing things we need to memorize/master because they will reappear in higher level chemistry courses. She is also very available from what I've heard. I havent needed to go to her office hours, but apparently she is available a lot more often than other professors. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1301 - Dr. Mercado is such a wonderful woman. She genuinely wants you to succeed in her class and is passionate about her job. I wish I started going to her office hours sooner so that I would have gotten a better grade in her class but my grade was a reflection of my laziness and not Dr. Mercado's teaching ability! She does have an accent but it is not hard to understand her at all. She gives out tons of extra credit throughout the semester and her tests are not difficult at all; all multiple choice. I didn't know what to expect before taking her class because she is a new professor but I ended up loving her by the end of the semester! Take Dr. Mercado!! - Grade In Class:C+
Comments:CHE 1301 - I absolutely loved Dr. Mercado. I took her class, her first semester teaching at Baylor. Her powerpoint slides were always available with good explanations and visuals and always thoroughly explained the topic. She also went over a few examples per topic which definitely helped. Becuase it was her first semester here, she didn't have the tests ready, but the tests were pretty much straight from the slides (like definitions/concepts) and of course chem problems. I would strongly suggest going to SI, he was a blessing and gave multiple practice problems that were very similar to the tests. If you can't go, just do practice problems from the book and attend Office Hours. When I attened her office hours, she did seem a bit shy/quiet, but she does genuinely want to help you and will explain whatever question you have thoroughly or in a different way than what she did in class for you. I loved her because I think she did gear towards all learning types, which is hard to do with a subject like chem, so I think she did amazing! She also had A TON of bonus point opportunities for you on the test/hw and again they're from the slides. Definitely take her! - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1301 - Mercado's class consists pretty much of just going over the textbook so it's not super helpful, however, it's not that hard either. The grade is 16% OWL and 84% exams (4 worth 16% each plus the final worth 20%). Each exam is multiple choice and there are usually several bonus questions so it's possible to score over 100. She also offered a couple of extra credit assignments worth 21 total points out of 1000. With exam bonuses and extra credit, it's possible to end up with a 110 in her course. If you understand the OWL assignments, you'll do fine on her exams. Also, doing the practice problems from the back of the textbook is helpful as some of them were directly on the exam. As far as 1301 goes, Mercado is a decent professor, but I wouldn't take her for upper level chems. - Grade In Class:A
