*A 5 star workload is an easy workload; a 3 star is average; whereas a 1 star workload is extremely hard.
Comments:HIS 1300 - Whatever you do, Take this man. He is such an incredible professor and helps with not only creating community, but also having a reasonable workload for a beginner level history class. He does a great job of explaining the different areas in his study, and also welcomes opinions that might not be correct and explain why. He is the best professor in this department, and take him at all costs. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1300 - TAKE HIM! He's such a kind and genuine teacher who actually cares about his students. There is weekly/bi-weekly quizzes on canvas and are open note - pretty straight forward. There is 2 test - a midterm and a final. It is half multiple choice (which come directly from old quizzes) and essay (he gives you the prompt beforehand). There's a history term project but you have the whole semester to do it. There is final project but its not bad. There is weekly reading but you just talk about them for 5 min at the beginning of class. Im not a big history person but I actually enjoyed coming to class. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1300 - Took him asynchronous online. I'd recommend just watching the lecture videos and write my essays off of what he says. There are quizzes every week, video discussion posts every week, and a few short essays and longer ones (midterm/final), but he's a super nice grader so as long as you meet the prompt/rubric you'll probably get a 100. There's a group project at the end with people with similar majors as you. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1300 - The content is not hard, but man do the essays take hella long so don't wait until the last minute. Dr Varghese is a solid prof for your history credit, but this is NOT a blowoff class. Just take into account your classes and manage your time. Overall he is a good choice just be prepared for the amount of writing and reading you have to do. He also loves to lecture on Native Americans. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:HIS1300 - I love this prof. He is genuinely the sweetest guy but his lectures are so boring. You lose participation points after 3 absences and a tardy counts as 1/2 an absence. He doesn't have many assignments besides weekly quizzes that are lowkey hard. But the assignments you do have are a lot of work, and both he and his syllabus are so vague. I feel like I never know if the work I am submitting is what he is asking for. That being said he is an extremely easy grader and has amazing grace for mistakes. I would recommend him but maybe choose him if other sections are full, it's a class you dread going to and hate doing assignments for, the essays are not terrible but some projects are not hard but so time-consuming. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1300 - (MINIMESTER/SUMMER) - INCREDIBLY EASY! This professor shows a lot of interest in each student's success through reaching out via emails, video discussions (more exclusive to Minimesters/online), and positive feedback on written responses. His essays/quizzes are never meant to trick you, but rather see if you read/watched the material for each unit. Additionally, his essays are straightforward, asking you to respond to a primary source (PSR), a simple 3-page (MAX) paper that only ensures you read the source in the Global Perspective book. He also has a midterm and final, which are just a written analysis of multiple primary sources and a coverage of the basic course material respectively. As long as you complete each assignment with a bit of care, you will get almost 100s on anything, just make sure you're checking the boxes on the rubric. I'm not a history person, so if you need a HIS 1300 credit, take him! Sidenote, he wants his papers in Turabian/Chicago style, so make sure you know the basics going in (but he isn't a stickler about it, so don't worry (: ) - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1300 - AMAZING PERSON! If I could take him for every class I would. He not only cares about you as a person, but proves how much he does. He was soooooo understanding about some of my absences and my health. He starts every Monday with highs and lows, and starts the week off right. He even prayed over us a few times, and I loved everything about him. Great guy, so smart, and a great teacher. He is not out to get you with work, but wants to ensure you're on the right track. THIS IS HOW TEACHERS SHOULD BE - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1300 - Dr. Varghese is a great professor, and an extremely good lecturer. I am not a fan of history, but the way he contextualizes it and looks at the big picture themes makes it very interesting and tolerable. His class is extremely easy. Daily readings (which you don't need to do) and one quiz a week. He has 3 PSR which are basically just one page reflection papers, and a bigger mid-term that synthesizes a lot of what you discuss in class. I did all of my writing assignments the day they were due and received 100's. If you put in any effort you will make an A. There is a term project that is an auto-100 as well, and a final essay that is just a 2-3 reflection on the class. Take him if you can! - Grade In Class:A
Comments:HIS 1300 - Dr. V is a super kind and caring guy who will do anything to help you and improve your course experience. Class consisted of a few short response papers (1-2 pages), a larger midterm paper, a semester long group report/presentation in the format of your choice, and a final paper (you have the entire last week to take home). The most important part of the class by far is the lectures. Super important to attend them and take note of significant things that he will point out to the class. The lectures provide almost everything needed for the writing assignments and he will do his best to address and concerns or questions you may have. He is a no-brainer for 1300. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1300 - EASY A! I hate history, reading, and writing, but I got a 100% on nearly every assignment! There's a 5 question quiz every week (open note and should be an easy 100%). There are 3 PSR's which are 1 page papers about a primary source. There's a final presentation (easy A). There's a midterm 5 page essay and a final 5 page essay. Don't stress if you're not good at writing. He mainly just checks if you answered the prompt, not how good your writing skills are. I turned in my essay with mis-spelled words and still got a 100%. His lectures are very boring and I would count down every minute, but he would usually let us out early, and it's so worth it for an EASY A! So thankful for this professor, he's super nice and likes to talk about his family. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1300 - Literally take this guy for your history credits. I hate history and probably do the bare minimum for this class and I still have a 100%. This class is just 3 writing assignments, weekly quizzes, a midterm and a final. Its almost impossible not to make a 100 on each quiz, and I also have never made less than a 100 on all my writing assignments, including the midterm... and I suck at writing. If you just complete the assignment you'll probably get an A. His lectures are decently interesting and I don'y even like history, Literally give yourself a break and take this class. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1300 - He is a respectable man that is passionate about his teaching. Class is not hard, but show up because there is a participation grade. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1300 - Had him the first semester he taught at Baylor and was so glad that I was in his class. Dr. Varghese is extremely passionate about his studies so it makes the class so much better. I am not a fan of history at all but he let us pick our topic for our paper as long as it aligned with the overall class. He also truly cares about his students! Def take him. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1300 - took him to fill my schedule and it ended up being a great use of my time. if you have basic writing skills and can make clear arguments, you can get 100 on every assignment. he was so encouraging and honestly made me belive in myself and my writing - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1300 - Not a big history fan but this class was great. Dr. Varghese had interesting lectures and was always available for questions during or after class and by email. The workload was easier than most gen eds, seriously. You will be tempted to skip doing the readings, because there is no penalty in doing so, but I recommend you read because you need to summarize 13 eras of history in 4 pages for the final, with ample citations. Download the yawp readings as pdf’s on a tablet (if you have one) or use Zotero and highlight/annotate. Trust me, you will be thankful when finals approach. Consider sharing a copy of the USGP with a friend. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1300 - Coming from someone who does not like history... he made this class so bearable. His lectures were really engaging, always respectful, always willing to help, always responds to emails quickly, would also let us out early. Highly recommend his class just for the sake of learning history in interesting perspectives. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1300 - Dr. Varghese was a great professor for HIS 1300. His class was engaging, easy to follow, and little to no work load. We had reflection essays due about once a month that were written based on your reaction to the textbook of primary sources. Additionally, we had a midterm essay (only 4 pages), a term project with a group he picks (based on your major), and a final essay. There were no tests or quizzes at all. I would recommend this class if you enjoy writing rather than tests. He is a passionate history professor who will answer any questions you have on assignments. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1300 - Dr. Varghese is amazing!!! He genuinely cares so much about his students, he knew everyone's name in a 30 person class and he has 3 sections. This course was extremely manageable with no quizzes or tests. There are 5 small one-page papers, a project, a midterm essay, and a final essay. If you go to class and have good notes on the material, you will be completely set up for success. If you're scared of taking a history course because of hard tests no need to worry!! Dr. Varghese is GREAT!! - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1300 - Dr. Varghese is one of the best professors I've had so far at Baylor. He was very understanding and helpful when I had Covid and he truly cares about his students. As long as you show effort in your work and communicate with him, making an A is very possible. Very minimal workload and no exams. Only a few 3/4 page responses, a midterm essay, a group project, and a final essay. Highly recommend taking him! - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1300 - Professor Varghese is one of the best history professors on campus. He’s super understanding and will work with you when it comes to assignments. He’s also pretty available for office hours. He really cares about his students and wants the best for you as you make your way through his class. The only thing you should be aware of is his final project. It’s pretty intensive but it’s super simple to complete! If you do his readings and turn in the PSR’s it’s an easy A. - Grade In Class:A
