*A 5 star workload is an easy workload; a 3 star is average; whereas a 1 star workload is extremely hard.
Comments:1305 - I took Palm in the team taught psychology course. She was my favorite professor out of all the 4. Her slideshows were helpful, and she made the lecture fun by passing around this microphone attached cube that students used to ask questions. She also engaged the class by having students complete "would you rather" questions. Her teaching is very straightforward and if you read the book and attend class, you will pass with an A. The book is 1,700 pages which is was quite a bit to read, but in the exam, they ask questions SPECIFICALLY ONLY in the book that wasn't covered in class so. The exams were more about applying the knowledge you learned rather than just asking the definitions, so I would recommend studying the material and compare each term with examples. This was one of the tougher psychology classes that I heard from others, so if you're looking for an easier class, don't take team taught. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:PSY 1305 - I took the team taught psych and Dr. Palm was by far the best prof. She is straightforward and clear! She also seemed to genuinely care about students- which is saying something considering how big our class was. Her test was also very straightforward and based on materials that all align with the textbook. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:psy3321 - I honestly didn't end up using the textbook after the first week except as a reference for case study papers. Dr. Palm is an excellent lecturer who does a great job telling you exactly what you need to know. Something that I particularly appreciate is that she posts the lectures so I can go through them all in 2x speed right before the exam. Honestly, I did a lot of cramming before exams but ultimately I feel like this was a highly valuable class and she did an excellent job presenting the information. Her tests were incredibly fair and pretty straightforward. I recommend paying attention in lecture and making flashcards of the diagnostic criteria of each disorder/other key points. I will say, she is much pickier on written assignments so make sure you take them seriously. I also appreciate that for a lot of the assignments you only need to do like 5 of the 12 posted which she explains on the first day. The exams were 40 question multiple choice and the final was 60 questions multiple choice. the quizzes are all open note. Overall, I'd say this class isn't high intensity but you get out of it what you put in and Dr. Palm is excellent and pretty chill, just be mindful that she's stricter on grading writing assignments. Good luck! - Grade In Class:A
Comments:PSY 3350 - You will get a good grade if you study hard, and put in the work in your outreach project. Her favoritism is pretty noticeable though, through grading and in the classroom. If she still does an outreach project, do not let "its just a show and tell" fool you. She will be nit picking at your artefact. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:2405 - Any class you can get with Dr. Palm do it! She is by far the most prepared, most intelligent, and kindest professor I have ever had at Baylor. Her lectures tell you everything you need to know for the exam and she genuinely cares about her students. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:PSY 1305 - I took the team-taught Psychological Science course. Dr. Palm's Section was one of the most straightforward. In the class, we had 4 exams and then a final and we had an online quiz for each chapter. Each exam was worth 100 points (lowest midterm exam was dropped), each quiz was 4 points (13 total with 3 drops), and the final was 160 points. Dr. Palm's exam was very fair. I would recommend going to the SI test reviews, making sure to take good notes in addition to the material on the slides during lectures, and reading the textbook. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:PSY 2405 - I was not a big fan of this class! I'm not a fan of research psy and I found this class to be tedious and very demanding. This wasn't necessarily attributed to Dr Palm's teaching though. She is a really nice person and good teacher. She is always available in her office or by email and often encourages us to go see her and get help/feedback on our work throughout the semester. There were a bunch of online quizzes during the semester which were pretty easy and big grade boosters. They're only 5 points each and easy to forget about but they really do weight in to your overall grade -- so do them! The exams are difficult and the questions are less definition based and more application/scenario based. So, STUDY!! The lab work is also pretty tedious, although not necessarily difficult. There is a semester end research paper and there are small sections of the paper due about every 2 weeks. At first this was pretty annoying but at the end of the semester it was really nice to just have to copy/paste everything together and not have to try to write a 12 page research paper starting from 0. In lab, we also had to get into assigned groups and come up with a research project idea in order to write the paper. I know this class is a pre-req and Dr Palm is the primary professor who teaches this course so there's not many options (if any) to do something else/take someone else. Despite the things I've said, it wasn't the hardest class I've had at Baylor. It's doable but just a lot of work and pretty time consuming. Your attitude on research psy does matter though. I had plenty of friends who excelled in this class and really liked the content. Like I said, I'm really not a fan of research psy so this class presented a little more difficult for me but you'll be fine! Just take your work seriously and do it when it's assigned, because it can pile up and get stressful very quickly! - Grade In Class:B
Comments:PSY 3350 - This class was fun but challenging! Dr Palm is a nice professor, who is very passionate about her work. She did a good job of always fully explaining content and not leaving lecture material unexplained -- so there were no surprises on the exams. That being said, the exams were difficult. STUDY!! She provides a textbook to supplement the class and will tell you it's not really needed, which it isn't, but don't totally forget about it. It does come in handy if there are any concepts you're confused about or need more examples of. She's a pretty demanding teacher, workload wise, and at times I felt pretty stressed with this class. There were weekly journal reflections and there was a semester ending research project, presentation, and final exam all due throughout the last 2 or so weeks! Dr Palm also really likes research and will have a few assignments throughout the semester where she asks us to find and reflect on peer-reviewed articles! This work can be pretty tedious but it helps prepare for the final research project. All this being said, Dr Palm is a good professor and a really nice person! She's always available and is eager for students to see her and get help/feedback on their work. This was a fun and doable class but don't blow it off or let things pile up over the semester because at the end during the race to finals it can get stressful! - Grade In Class:B
Comments:PSY 2405 - I have taken multiple classes with Dr. Palm, but this was the one that made me feel the need to leave a review. Dr. Palm seems like a sweet person but she is not a great professor. Her classes are taught as if the students are elementary students but her exams are set up like graduate students level questions. When you study for the exams you feel prepared, but when you see the questions you wonder where you were expected to learn the things she asks you. You're expected to be able to conduct a research study and write a research paper on what you did. Hopefully you have some background in research because the lecture will not address anything you need to know for this major part of your grade. The TA's do their best but they can only do so much when you have no basic knowledge. This class needs major restructure, she has failed these students. The day before our exam (Exam was on Monday), we did a review and the entire class was still confused. She asked to do a thumps up, sideways, or down and there were very few thumbs up. She did not care to move the exam back or give any kind of supplemental information to help the students achieve success. This is not the effort I see from other professors, especially in this department. - Grade In Class:B+
Comments:2405 - Never take Dr. Palm for anything beyond an intro course. She is a fairly nice person, but her test questions are extremely vague. She gave us multiple choice exams, and many of the questions easily could have had 2 or 3 proper responses. She also assigned us a large essay throughout the semester, and we completed it in sections throughout the semester. Even though I made all of the individual corrections she had noted throughout the semester, she found several new 'mistakes' in my paper to take points off for. She really is not a fair professor for any class beyond intro psychology, so don't make the mistake of taking her class. - Grade In Class:B+
Comments:PSY 2405 - Dr. Palm is a sweetheart. She truly cares about her students. I honestly was very quiet in her Research Methods class, and did not focus as much as I should have (I struggle to pay attention in afternoon classes lol), but she still showed love and compassion when I came to her with questions or asked to make up an exam that was scheduled during a hard week. During our last few classes, she had to bring her one year old son to class, and he was so cute! Dr. Palm clearly has a big heart and is called to teach college students. I pray that she continues in this profession and is able to touch more lives! - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1305 - Dr.Palm is a very kind professor, with that being said it was not at all necessary to go to class. I just studied the textbook and did well on the tests. she has weekly quizzes but they can be done with unlimited attempts and up until the day of the test with no repercussions. she does offer a lot of extra credit which is nice. Overall the workload is super light, but that does mean that you have to put in effort with the tests. she was just super unhelpful and stubborn when it came to vague or completely wrong test questions. - Grade In Class:B+
Comments:PSY 3350 - Meredith Palm's class is single handidly the reason I contemplated everything about my life. She teaches the course material at the level of a 6th grader but then tests you as if you are a grad student. The exams are in such detail that any single sentence within the textbook is asked about. She pushes class material that is liberal leaning, including things that infringe on my religious beliefs such as same sex marriage. I felt numerous times in this class that if I didn't camouflage myself to match her slides then I would be frowned upon. I chose to go to Baylor for an environment that would allow biblical beliefs and classroom environment to mesh, however I understand that I won't have the same beliefs as everyone else. This does not mean I am okay with only discussing a household that has a child who develops a disdain for their born gender. Meredith Palm only focuses on the development of a child who is homosexual, or trans. Little time is spent on an average family and an average childhood development experience. The group project is brutal, and is very hard to coordinate amongst peers. I also felt like there was so much course work in this class with little reward. Not only did we have assignments that were due almost every day, these assignments did nothing to help me understand and comprehend the material. I had to hop on here and write my experience because too many of these people are skipping the simple fact that this class was brutal. Is Dr.Palm nice? Yes, I am not denying that if I was to approach her after class she would be nice and helpful. What I am saying is that she doesn't seem to translate that well in assignments and teaching. Also would like to say that all psychology department professors generally suck. I would just strongly recommend trying to take this with someone else. - Grade In Class:C+
Comments:PSY 1305 - Dr. Palm was truly one of the most understanding professors I've ever had. Due to circumstances, I went over the limit for absences and she did not end up failing me with the policy. She's a great prof and the class wasn't too bad. If I had different circumstances, I could have done better. I highly recommend her though! - Grade In Class:C
Comments:1305 - I took Dr. Palm for PSY1305. Here is the thing I have learned about Dr. Palm and psych in general-- everyone underestimates it, especially pre-meds. Everyone always focuses on the biology classes or ochem or whatever, but people forget to realize that this class is roughly (just less bc sociology) 1/4 of the entire MCAT. And yet, everyone acts like this is a blow-off course. It is not at all. Roughly 15% of the class will receive an A in the course (above average), but about 30% of the class is pre-med. This says a lot about the course because not just pre-meds get A's in the class--they actually tend to blow it off. Thus, everyone complains how hard psych is and how unnecessarily hard it is, but the reality is, it is just the fact that people go in with the mindset it should be easy. It is just like any other science course you need to take. That being said, of all the psychology professors, Dr. Palm is BY FAR the best. Any bad reviews against her are because of the class, and not her teaching. This isn't a super easy class, but Dr. Palm gives you plenty of opportunities to succeed in it. She drops the lowest test, drops FIVE quizzes, FIVE homework assignments, AND gives extra credit (small, but still there). She is super sweet and definitely super knowledgeable in the subject, and she wants her students to succeed. While I didn't find the lectures to be the most helpful part of the course, they were still super interesting, and various activities we did as a class made some of the information we learned more memorable when it came to the tests. If you realize this class is not inherently a breeze and you put just the slightest amount of effort into it, you are more than well-equipped to succeed in this course. Dr. Palm is great, take her over team-taught/Malavanti for sure! - Grade In Class:A
Comments:PSY 3350 - Developmental Psych. I love Dr. Palm! She is one of the kindest, most intentional professors I've had. Always trying to improve the class and answer any and all questions that people have. She will discuss tests or even just life with you! Now I will say, this class is not easy. Dr. Palm doesn't usually lecture from the book, but the tests are pretty book-specific. And the book is lengthy. There are also a few busywork assignments a week, which is annoying, but they're not a big deal. I also disagree with the previous review of Dr. Palm--yes, she leans more towards progressive views, but she never makes anyone feel judged or wrong for their beliefs. I don't agree with her on everything either, but she definitely isn't close-minded. Her lecturing may be a tad basic, but I don't think it takes away from the class at all. I would recommend her! She is really a kind and caring prof. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:Psy 3330 - I haven't finished this course yet, but I need to come on here to let y'all know about Meredith Palm before you sign up for this class. If you have the opportunity to take another class or another professor, I would definitely recommend that instead of taking this class. When you're sitting in this class, you feel like you're in middle school. She explains things at a very basic level. We have discussions over extremely basic topics that are mainly just our opinions, not based on any material that we're "learning". This class is also 100% based on her opinion. It's difficult as a Christian to sit in this class and listen to her spout her opinion about gender and sexuality. I feel shamed for wanting to raise my children as a specific gender and not gender neutral. I understand that there are going to be some controversial topics discussed in the material, and I totally respect that. The issue that I have is that if we do not agree with her opinion, we are wrong. I'm made to feel BAD if I don't agree with her. Anyways, now let's discuss how the class is formatted. There is something due every class period. This includes either an "Investigative Development" Case/Quiz or "Mastery Training" which is vocabulary practice. You have to do the mastery training over 2-3 days because it forces you to take breaks. So really, you have to do something everyday for this class. These don't take up a lot of time, but add them onto all of the textbook reading, and the workload really adds up. I will say, though, that she drops a lot of these which is really nice to boost your grade. The tests are not fun at all. They are extremely specific, and she doesn't discuss any of those details in class. You aren't tested on concepts, you're tested on specific sentences in the book. You can be successful on these tests, you just REALLY have to read the textbook, maybe twice. The final is 1/3 of your final grade, so good luck. She does seem to make herself somewhat available which is nice. You can review your tests and talk with her, so that's good. I'm disappointed in this class because the material could be so interesting, but overall, I would not recommend. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:3350 - Dr. Palm is an amazing professor. She genuinely cares about her students and their understanding of the material. She loves talking with you about your life, grad school, classes, etc. The one thing to note about her class is that the exams can be pretty difficult. She often takes small details from the textbook (especially statistics and examples given in the textbook) which are hard to remember. Definitely go to lecture as much as possible because she also asks questions over things discussed in the lecture. Overall, this class was very enjoyable and I learned a lot. Take Dr. Palm if you can! - Grade In Class:B+
Comments:1305 - I have no reason why Dr. Palm has such average reviews. It is a hard class! But you probably already knew that. There are many drops which is so helpful and Dr. Palm is understanding. Her A is a 90. Her test are a little confusing and subjective. I will not lie, but if you read the textbook you will be okay. Also, the workload is not insane. I look forward to taking Dr. Palm again. She is just so nice. And her lectures are super fascinating and I never have seen her not able to answer a question. I am so happy with this class! - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1305 - Dr. Palm is definitely not the worst professor I have ever experienced, but she\'s definitely not the best either. Let me be frank: I have thoroughly enjoyed the class and the material, but I don\'t have the grade to show for it. Dr. Palm is a very sweet woman. However, she is young, she\'s a newer professor (this is only her second year at Baylor), and frankly, she\'s self-righteous. I have read my textbook thoroughly (which is the bulk of the classwork), I have understood every concept, but if your exact definition doesn\'t match hers, you will not receive a good grade. I suggest this class to someone who is knowledgable in science or medicine. DO NOT take this class if you are looking for an easy science credit. This is the situation I was in and clearly, while I don\'t have the worst grade, I did not excel. - Grade In Class:C+
Comments:1305 - This class definitely isn't the hardest at Baylor, but its far from a cakewalk. Dr. Palm is a pretty good professor, and the class itself is pretty straight forward. It was my first semester in college & I had trouble getting adjusted, and am not in Pre-Med. I came to Baylor as a Psychology major and immediately knew it would be too hard for me in the long run so I changed my major to something I actually liked. The workload itself isn't necessarily tough unless you didn't take a lot of AP classes in high school, such as myself. There's a weekly ten question quiz on a chapter each week, and every other week there's a paper you have to write. The tests, however, are pretty challenging. My best advice is take the class seriously. Definitely read as much as you can if you want a B. It's a lot of memorization of material, but if you have an interest in psychology, I highly recommend the class. Dr. Palm is really sweet and down to earth and in my opinion, one of the most approachable professors in the Psych department. - Grade In Class:D
Comments:1305 - An excellent professor who is always willing to help. The workload is really light. - Grade In Class:B+
Comments:1305 - (team taught): DON'T TAKE TEAM TAUGHT. It's a horrible class and it all comes from a randomized test bank so your classmates can be getting easier questions than you. The grade consisted only of exams. There are 4 (50pt) exams and the final (100pt) where one of the 50pt exams can be dropped. In order to keep an 'A' in the class, you can only miss 25 questions total during the WHOLE semester. Mia, the SI, helped so much...but she graduated so I'm not sure how the future SI would be. Do your best to NOT take team taught psychology because it definitely is a weed out class. The professors don't care about your grade and they don't care to get to know the students. Not only that, but they never finish the lecture slides for an exam so you're stuck studying untaught material. Honestly, this has been the worst class I've taken at Baylor, and definitely not worth private school tuition. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:PSY 3350 - I love Dr. Palm! I also had her for NSC 2306, and she is one of my favorite professors I've had. She genuinely cares about her students and the courses that she is teaching. She gives extra credit if you go to her office hours which she calls "Coffee and Conversation" which for some reason made it a bit less intimidating! Her tests are a tad difficult just because she uses a lot of examples/application based tests which are sometimes arguable, but you just have to figure out how she asks questions/how she thinks (which I've had to do with almost all of my professors so I don't think that's necessarily anything specific against Dr. Palm). She also has a good amount of outside work (quizzes/review work), but it's a breeze and honestly a good grade bumper if you end up not doing too well on a couple of tests. She will fully sit down with you and talk about life, tests, anything - and for a teacher to be that attentive and open to talking is amazing. HIGHLY RECOMMEND HER FOR ANY COURSE! - Grade In Class:A
Comments:PSY 3350 - I literally loved her. She’s a wonderful professor, is always willing to help and her tests are not super hard. Additionally, she’s super understanding and I highly highly recommend her. She does have a lot of assignments each week that can be tedious (one warmup and one review thingy), but otherwise it was one project and exams. The final is very close to the other exams, just cumulative. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1305 (team-taught) - Personally, I think Professor Palm did the best job out of the team taught section. Especially considering that this was her first semester, I really think she did an amazing job! The way she presented the material was great and she was very enthusiastic in her lectures. Her exam was not too difficult. 110% recommend going to SI for this course, especially if it is with Mia!!! - Grade In Class:B+
Comments:PSY 1305 - (Team Taught) I think that Dr. Palm was the best of the team taught, she was willing to meet to review tests and actually tried to finish her slides. Her test was hard though, I studied a crazy amount and still did not do well. Hard class, decent professor, seemed very sweet and lectured well. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1305 Team Taught - I think this was Dr. Palm's first semester teaching, and I think she did a phenomenal job. She did a great job explaining material in class. She's the last of the four professors in team taught intro psych, and her exam was the 2nd easiest in my opinion. Like the rest of the course, be sure to read the textbook and study consistently. This material in this class isn't hard it is just a lot of material. Reading and studying consistently really helps. While I was not a big fan of the team taught style, Dr. Palm was probably my favorite of all the professors - Grade In Class:A
