*A 5 star workload is an easy workload; a 3 star is average; whereas a 1 star workload is extremely hard.
Comments:1301 - Take Dr.Chu! She is the most kind and loving professor and truly wants you to succeed. As a freshman pre-med adjusting to the business of college, Dr.Chu's class was terrific. I felt challenged, but her tests were easier than the homework for me, and she gives 3 extra credit points for completing her practice tests. Going to office hours with her was truly helpful, and I recommend doing that if you ever struggle because she is happy to walk you through any problem. The active homework was minimal and helpful to keep you on track with what you are learning in class. During lectures, she will point out types of questions on the test, walk the class through them, and ask us if we could do the same concept on the test. I recommend reading the textbook/slides beforehand so you understand what she is talking about because chemistry can be overwhelming without prior knowledge. Just familiarize yourself with the material to make your life easier. 10/10 would recommend! - Grade In Class:A
Comments:CHE 1301/2 - Chu is a really good person with a really good personality, but her teaching skills need some work. Her exams are usually hard to predict even with the practice exams she gives out. Theres a decent amount of homework for her classes and theyre sometimes kinda hard. Her lectures can be really confusing too, not only because she can't explain things well, but because she also has an accent that takes getting used to. She isn't the worst option for Chem 1 and 2, but I think there are better options out there. I somehow managed to pull a B+ through in these classes, but it was only because I had extra time on the exams from accommodations. Sometimes her exams are so hard and lengthy theres not enough time in a class period to get them done. Theyre a mix of open answer and multiple choice depending on the unit, and her SI for 1301 was HORRIBLE, and didnt even understand the units either. Shes not the last choice, but if someone else is available, i would take someone else... - Grade In Class:B+
Comments:1301_18 - Dr. Chu is a great teacher. She cares about your success and help you understand the materials. For difficult concepts, she always give tips on how to approach and answer those questions on the exam. She posts extra practice worksheet’s on Canvas to help with the content. The course is what you’d expect from a chemistry class- it’s not always easy, and there a lot of math involved. Her lectures, along with homework, and SI sessions helped me a lot in learning the content. My class is early in the morning, so I’m usually half wake and Dr. Chu has a soft voice, so you really need to pay attention to keep up. Overall, if you stay on top of the work and keep up with the moderate homework, you should have no problem of getting an A in this class. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:CHEM 1301 - I’m worried I might fail this class, but I’m not blaming Prof Chu—this is on me. Her exams can be challenging, and while I thought I did well on most of them, I was mistaken. There’s a lot of information to cover, and it can be overwhelming at times. I know I could earn an A if I put in the right amount of study time. If I do end up failing 1301, I’d be willing to take her class again, and I’ll be better prepared next time. - Grade In Class:D
Comments:1301 - I really enjoy Dr. Chu’s class. She explains the material clearly, and her notes are easy to follow. I appreciate her teaching style and look forward to attending her lectures. While the exams are lengthy, they are fair. Chemistry can be challenging, but Dr. Chu provides all the resources we need to succeed. I plan to take her again for 1302. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1301 + 1302 - This Professor SUCKS, she is so unhelpful. The course is not that hard if it was taught at even a decent level. I took this course a full year ago and just realized I didn't write a review so I went back, thats how horrible she is. Her rating is an 80 for NO good reason. Her slides are packed with information and all she does is skim read the slides. If you are good at teaching yourself a course then you will be fine, if not GOOD LUCK. - Grade In Class:C+
Comments:1301 - Dr.Chu literally can't teach! I fell asleep in her class every day. Her test are easy but she just can't teach. You will have to teach yourself everything. - Grade In Class:B+
Comments:1301 & 1302 - LOVE Chu! I took her for Chem 1 & 2. Both courses are structured the same. She is so sweet and always super willing to help with any questions during office hours. Get to know her and show a bit of effort. She's also willing to help career wise outside of class. All you need for her classes are her slides. Do her practice worksheets to practice for exams. DO HER PRACTICE EXAMS! She gives one right before each exam for extra credit. & they're SUPER helpful. She gives Aktiv HW but I've noticed its not has hard and not as much as other chem professors. Overall, this class made chem simple and easy to follow. I enjoyed it! - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1302 - Does many examples in class of the problems. Her accent is a little hard to understand sometimes. Your grades are 80% test and then 15% homework and 5% class participation. SHE DOES NOT CURVE. She does give 3-5 points extra credit for each exam some of those is just completion some of them is if your answer is correct. Had office hours everyday. Overall not a bad class would not say best teacher but would recomand over other teachers. - Grade In Class:B
Comments:1301_6 - Dr. Chu is an excellent professor. This is my second time taking the course. I can say, I have made significant progress in my understanding of the concepts. She spent a lot of time on challenging topics like quantum numbers, molecular polarity, hybridization, and calorimetry which I never understood before. One thing that I don’t like is she assigned a lot of homework and never give bonus questions in the exam unlike my previous professor. Her exams are also long and way more difficult. She gave us an opportunity to get 3 points extra credit for each exam if you answer her practice test. She’s very kind but very strict with points. Take her if you really want to learn and you have the time to study everyday. - Grade In Class:B+
Comments:1302 - She is incredible and I would gladly take her in a heartbeat. The class was very fair and relatively easy however I had seen basically all of that information that I learned in highschool except Electrochemistry, but I got a 105.5 on that exam. She gives a ton of extra credit on each exam and provides multiple practice tests and worksheets. She uses the PowerPoint slide method which is okay but all of the easy topics she overexplains and all of the hard topics underexplains. Make sure to study with people. The slides weren't that bad, however I dislike how she would start a question on slide 5 but then finish that same question over like 5 more slides. She should just put it all on 1. She also posts study guides which are extremely helpful and accurate. Overall an incredible professor. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:CHE 1302 - Dr. Chu is super helpful on chem 2, the best thing is she will give several example and worksheet for every chapter to help you review what you've learned. I love this way because this is fit for STEM class. In stem class, what we need is to understand the theorey and solve for problems. more example and prectice you get, deeper understanding you got in this chapter. Her lecture is also helpful for understanding. She 's a kind person, and care about her student, go to talk to her!! She will give you several helpful idea. Even though, she have little accent, I don't think that will inluence anything. You will totally understand what she said if you follow her step. Please take her if you can!!! - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1301 - She is a very kind and sweet person until you get to the tests. Her tests are unpredictable - for reference I went to her office hours every week, and she actually told me that I knew the material, but the tests had curveball problems and I actually never made an A on a single one of her tests, when I was getting 100s on the homework/practice tests and never missing classes. Her test averages were barely 70s. Also, she is very strict about not rounding your grade. On the first day of class, she showed multiple slides of screenshots of emails from students desperately asking for as little as 1 point back, and her denying them. One email even said that they would have to leave Baylor because the point difference would tip their GPA which would make them lose their scholarship, and Dr. Chu said she didn't round it. Yes, she is very approachable and willing to help you, but her tests are not easy, she can be hard to understand in lectures, and the homework and practice tests are not a good gauge of the tests. - Grade In Class:B+
Comments:1301 - Dr. Chu is one of the sweetest people I have met. She is super gentle and kind. One thing that is helpful in her lectures is that she works through a lot of problems which is helpful for the test. I would encourage you to read through the textbook before coming to class in order to understand the material better and that way you can ask more questions. One thing I found to be annoying were the homework assignments. She assigns AKTIV homework twice a week every week. It definitely feels like a lot at certain times but they're free points so make sure to finish them. The reason I got a bad grade in the class was because I missed a lot of the assignments. Her tests are fair and she offers three points of extra credit for every exam. She will also replace your lowest test grade with the final if you do better on the final. I would definitely recommend Dr. Chu! - Grade In Class:C+
Comments:CHE 1301 - If you are nervous about taking chemistry at Baylor, Dr. Chu is the single best professor that you could possibly have. Not only does she lecture very well and give helpful PowerPoints, but the grade distribution in her class is extremely fair. There are 4 exams worth 15% each, homework worth 15% (the homework is really helpful and normally does not take longer than an hour per each assignment), class participation worth 5%, and the final worth 20%. She is available basically everyday for office hours and is more than happy to answer any questions you may have. Her exams are straightforward and come right from the notes, practice exam, and homework. Plus, she gives extra credit opportunities for every exam and will curve if the grade average is a little lower. She is also one of the kindest and most gentle people I have ever met (and she has the cutest accent)! Take Dr. Chu if you are able! She is a blessing to Baylor's chemistry department. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1301 - Dr. Chu is the best! She is super sweet and truly cares about her students. Chemistry can be a hard subject, but her tests were straightforward and over the material on her slides. She also offered 3 points extra credit on each test if you do the practice exam. Theres no quizzes in her class, but the homework grades were weighted the same as one exam which is super nice. Her grading system consisted of four exams each at 15%, homework at 15%, participation at 5%, and the final at 20%. The final could also replace your lowest exam if you did better on it. To prepare for her tests I'd really recommend looking over the powerpoints and reworking the problems there, as well as, doing the optional worksheets she has on canvas. Overall, I would 110% recommend Dr. Chu for 1301! - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1302 - I'm gonna be so honest, I BARLEY passed this course. To begin with I'm not an expert in the math department but Dr. Chu always tried her best to explain the concepts to me. She was available when she said she was, she will let you review exams and you are more than welcome to ask her questions to walk you through it. She does not make you feel dumb and is happy to help :) I know for a fact if I had taken another professor I would have hit rock bottom. Dr. Chu cares about her students success! The concepts and theories weren't difficult more me to grasp, in fact those were always the questions I aced, the math part was on me. So thank the Lord for having my back! Dr. Chu also provides a reasonable amount of workload, just keep up with it and don't fall behind. DO THE REVIEWS, ESPECIALLY FINAL REVIEW! And take advantage of any extra cred opportunity, that is your golden ticket!!! - Grade In Class:C
Comments:CHE 1301 - Dr. Chu is great! I'm not in a chemistry focused field, but I definitely was able to understand the content and do well on all her exams. She gives a decent amount of work in the form of OWL, which is due every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Her lectures are also very useful and relatively easy to follow. She gives quite a bit of extra credit for each exam, with a maximum of 3 extra credit points on each exam, based on how you do on her practice tests. If you want to do well in her class you can definitely get an A if you put in the work but the class is definitely not free. This was the only chem class I needed to take for my major and I was able to get a B+ just doing the OWL on time and studying the night before for almost every exam. If you want to learn chem and are willing to put in the work Dr. Chu is a great professor and I would highly recommend her to anyone. - Grade In Class:B+
Comments:1301 - Alright, Dr.Chu is a-ok 1301 professor that being said it is no walk in the park. You have 4 exams and chem owls due every Tues, thurs, Sat. The final replaces your lower test grade. Her exams are around 25-28 questions with free-response questions. She does up to 3 extra credit points on exams if you do her practice test but you have to work for it. She will curve the test if the average is below a 73. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1301 - Dr. Chu is one of the better professors to take for Chem 1. She is incredibly kind and is always inviting the class to come to office hours. She genuinely cares about all of her students and wants everyone to perform well. Her lectures can be hard to follow, so if you have prior chemistry knowledge and are able to study/learn well on your own that will definitely help for this class. She assigns a good deal of Owl homework, and she will replace your lowest exam grade with your final exam grade if it is higher. There are also lots of extra credit opportunities. Overall it isn't an easy A but it's definitely doable if you put in the effort. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1301 - Dr. Chu is the cutest! She is great for 1301. Her class was not difficult, especially because I had prior chemistry knowledge. She is very patient and goes pretty slow even though there is a lot of content to go through. She assigns a lot of owls but they are each very short and help you learn a lot. Her tests are also not very hard as long as you do the practice tests (which give you extra credit) and read through your notes on the slides. I really recommend her! Her voice is very relaxing. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:CHE 1301-18 - Dr. Chu is the BEST professor to take in 1301. She is a very dedicated teacher and spend so much time to help her students. Her lectures are very detailed, but she will guide you through to understand the materials. She is very engaging and will always check your comprehension in class. Her exams are hard and long but if you study her examples in her notes, listen to her lectures, answer the worksheets and the practice test, you’ll for sure get a high grade. There would always be a chance to get a 3 point extra credit for each test but you have to work hard for it. She does not curve the grade but replace your lowest test if you did better in your final exam. You must put in a lot of effort to get A in her class but you will learn a lot if you study hard! - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1301 - I love Dr. Chu and her teaching style. I believe she taught as well and prepared us for our higher Chemistry classes. She focused on the stuff that I did not learn from high school. I truly enjoyed her class. Her exams were not easy and can be tricky, but if you study regularly, you’ll ace the test. I am excited to take her 1302 class. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1301 - Yes, Dr. Chu is a very nice person but her teaching style is not very helpful. She is kinda hard to understand and doesn't go over the math problems as much as she should so that the class understands. So, if you aren't very good at stoichiometry, I wouldn't take Dr. Chu. - Grade In Class:B
Comments:1301 - Dr. Chu is the sweetest!!! She cares for her students, will get to know you, and wants you to succeed. She is also very available with office hours! The workload isn't bad. Her classes are straight lectures with OWL homework due a few nights a week. These can be tedious but are great practice for the exams! He grades consist of 5 tests, a final, and your OWL homework grade (which is a grade booster because you have nine tries for each problem). Your final also replaces your lowest test grade. Her class is very doable if you stay on top of your work and keep up with the owls! My only negatives are that an A is a 93 and I didn't feel like she was the best teacher. This class isn't crazy hard conceptually, however, I felt like I had to learn a lot of the material on my own because her lectures weren't clear for me. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1301 - Best chem 1301 professor! she's the sweetest - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1301 - Dr. Chu is an amazing professor. Chemistry has always been my worst science so my first two test grades were pretty bad. I went to her office hours and she was incredibly helpful. The tests are multiple choice for the majority, and if there are free response, they're only a few questions. The homework consists of a few OWL assignments due 2-3 times a week, which can be a lot at time but they are very helpful, it's my main way of learning content with calculations. I wish she taught 1302 so I could take her again. - Grade In Class:B
Comments:CHE 1301 - Dr. Chu is an amazing professor! Her lectures are very thorough and she knows her stuff. She always gives tips to learn and remember things quickly. Because this is an online T, R class, there is always an overwhelming information and it is hard to stay focused most of the time. She is very interactive, and she tries to make the lecture interesting though. Overall, this is a doable class, and you will pass if you do your part! - Grade In Class:B
Comments:1301 - Super sweet woman although not the best professor I've ever had, she's available to help you with anything you need whenever you need it. If I had actually studied for this course I definitely would've gotten an A but I just had other things going on. If you are wanting the A simply do and understand the OWLV2 homework, the additional worksheets she provides and SI. - Grade In Class:B+
Comments:1301 - Dr. Chu is a very caring and excellent professor. She explains each topic very well. She wants you to succeed and truly understand the material. She is very helpful during her office hours. She has 4 major exams, OWLv2, and a final exam. There is a ton of Owl homework which is equivalent to 1 test grade. If you complete all the OWL, you’ll for sure get a 100 on it. She does not drop the lowest exam grade but replaces it with the average of the 4 exams. Her exam is hard but fair because she will prepare you for the exam. There is a review session before each exam. Just like any chemistry class, you must put in a lot of work to learn and to earn an A in this class. Overall, I recommend taking her in 1301. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1301 - This lady is literally the sweetest ever, that being said, I do not think this class prepared me for Chemistry ll. It was pretty easy to pass because she really is a sweetheart and if you did the OwL she gave you a 100 for a test grade. She just makes you want to give her a hug because she really was caring and wanted the students to understand. - Grade In Class:B
Comments:1301 - One of the best Professors! She has a thick accent but you’ll get use to it. Her tests are hard but I think very fair. You have to put in the work to get the grade. She’s very helpful and genuinely wants you to understand the materials. I hope to have her again in another chemistry class. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:CHE 1301 - She was the absolute worst professor I've ever had. She says she its available for office hours but her hours are in peak times of classes and she will not work around it until she wants to see you. Good luck understanding her English also. - Grade In Class:D
Comments:Che1301 - This class is not hard at all. Dr. Chu makes her lecture notes, and the recording of the lecture available on Canvas. She provides worksheet for each topic, practice test, weekly review session and she has office hours every day. Her exams are fair. Two out of the four exams are outside class time, but she gives us 3-4 time options, spread within a day. I like that she proctors the exam via Zoom so I can ask her for clarifications. She also allows us to take the make-up exam if we missed any and she is very flexible with it. I took my makeup exam outside of the scheduled time in her office. It helps to print and read the notes before you come to class or join the Zoom, and finish the homework on time. She also opens all the past due homework for grading. It is not hard to get A in this class if you do your part. I learned a lot from her and I plan to take her 1302 class. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1301 - This is my second time to take CHE 1301 with Dr. Chu. I enjoy the class my second time around. The secret is to attend every class in-person even if it is a hybrid class and do your OWL on time. I was really encouraged by her support and willingness to help me. 1301 is a difficult subject, but Dr. Chu is always available to help her student succeed. - Grade In Class:B
Comments:CHE 1301 - I love the way she teaches. She's very thorough and very patient. She assigned a lot of OWLv2 but very lenient with the due dates. I like OWLv2 because the homework help me to prepare for Dr. Chu's tests. If you study regularly, there is no way to fail her class. She provides us all the resources we need to succeed in her class. Overall, I think she is a wonderful lecturer. - Grade In Class:B
Comments:1301 - DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. Everything I learned I learned in SI. She doesn't teach well. she assigns a ton of OWLV2 hw. The biggest issue is that throughout the semester she demonstrated that she has no respect for her students' time. She assigned 6 hours worth of stoichiometry on OwlV2 on the day before easter when were supposed to be on break. And that work was not available until break had started so we couldn't even work ahead of time. She had tests in the morning on a saturday. Her tests were not during class time because she wants them double proctored. We were on lockdown browser on our laptops and zoom on our phones. Because of that she only had certain times we could take the test none of which were during her class time. If she wants a double proctored test she should be doing it on her own time not mine, and having a test on a saturday morning is just cruel. She's no help at all. Do not take her if you can avoid it. - Grade In Class:B
Comments:1301 - Dr. Chu is a great teacher and truly cares for your success in her class and as well your understanding of the content. She has plenty of extra practice worksheets (not graded) that she posts on canvas to help with understanding the material. The course itself is what you would expect. Chemistry isn't always easy and as with almost any science, there is going to be hints of math spread throughout. If you have an appreciation for science, and in particular chemistry, conceptually understanding the content in this course shouldn't be too hard. In this class and as far as I know, all chemistry courses, homework was assigned via a platform called OwlV2. Personally, this was what helped me most in addition to S.I. and lectures with becoming familiar and mastering the content. In regards to exams, Dr. Chu prepared us all very well by offering an optional practice test before each exam, which if you completed added extra credit to your exam grade. Also our S.I. offered an optional practice test which was also very helpful. In all, if you are willing to put in the work and are disciplined in keeping up with the moderate workload in this course, you should have no problem getting an A. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1301 - At the beginning of this course, I was a bit nervous because I was retaking it. Dr. Chu is very sweet and wants her students to do well. She'll assign OWLv2 homework, like every other chem professor.Just do it all, and you'll most likely get an A in that category. She was very lenient about it, and assigned extra credit OWLv2 and extended deadlines. Her lectures are alright, just show up because attendance is part of your grade. I would be really sleepy in her lectures (lol) but that was just because I was in her 8 am and she has a very soft voice. Like any college class, you'll have to do more than just going to lectures and doing the homework. Her TA is pretty good, and SI helped me a lot. The first test was doable, the second test was extremely hard, the third test was easy, and the fourth test is difficult. My advice would be to go to SI regularly (you get a practice test if you attend more than 3 times. Very helpful) and do all the worksheets she has on her canvas page. There were times I would see problems on the test that were very similar to the worksheets and practice tests. Go to office hours, too. She also curves the tests and drops your lowest score, which is great. She also offered us extra credit for completing practice tests and weekly video quizzes. Dr. Chu gives you all the resources you need to do well, and at the very least, pass the class. I would recommend her. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1301 - Dr. Chu has an amazing teaching style. She made Chemistry extremely clear, easy to understand, and apply. Everything was very organized and useful. She covered each topic extensively and I did learn a lot. I recommend her class to incoming freshman. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:Che 1301 - Dr. Chu's lectures are very by the book. She reads directly off the PowerPoint slides that she prints out and gives to you. This means that you can read ahead and know what will be said in class, although the lectures themselves are not terribly engaging. Her accent may be slightly confusing at first, but you'll get used to it, follow the slides. She's very nice, and strongly encourages people to attend her office hours. Do that and try to get at least some of the OWL problems done before the night of the deadline and you should be good. - Grade In Class:B
Comments:CHE 1301 - Dr. Chu is kind, approachable, and encouraging. You will learn a lot if you attend her class and you study her Powerpoint regularly. Her exam is fair and usually consists of true or false, multiple-choice, and free-response questions. She does not always curve the exam grade but she drops one of them. I came to her office hour once but I answered all the worksheets she posted on Canvas. I also never missed an OWL HW. I got A. Dr. Chu is a great professor to take for 1301. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1301 - Dr. Chu is one of the sweetest professors at Baylor. She is greatly helpful in office hours and definitely wants her students to succeed. She has four tests and drops one of them. Dr. Chu prints out the PowerPoints for you and you just follow along and fill in the blanks. Attendance is a part of your grade so go to class! You do have Owlv2 problems, but every chem professor assigns them. There are also weekly quizzes online which are 8% of the grade. The tests can get pretty difficult, but an A is attainable if you are willing to work really hard, and I mean really hard. But, she offers extra credit! That’s a plus! - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1301 - Dr. Chu is doing a great job with online learning. She is very thorough in explaining the concepts in her video lectures. She gave us two practice tests for our test 3 in which you will earn 10 points extra credits if you answered the 50 questions correctly. She never did this in our previous tests, so I am thankful. Her exams are fair as long as you read your powerpoints and attend/listen to the lecture. I enjoyed Dr. Chu’s class and I highly recommend her! - Grade In Class:B+
Comments:1301 - Professor Chu got me through Chem even when i didn't think it was possible (terrible first try with a prior chem professor who shall remain unnamed.) She made it enjoyable to be honest, went in depth in lectures and teached in a traditional style - power points, explanations, examples etc. Hands down best professor to take for chem if you are not good at it. She gives ALOT and i cannot express this enough.. ALOT of extra credit. Impossible to fail this class if you put in some kind of effort. Sweet lady too, take her. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1301 - Dr. Chu really cares a lot about her students. I loved having her as my professor and I appreciate how approachable she is. She is very patient with me when I came in during her office hours to ask questions. She teaches the information from her powerpoints, but she does not just read them. Her example problems are all written in her powerpoints but she solves them in the whiteboard step by step and she gives a lot of examples. She offers review session before each major exam outside our class hour. Her lecture is sometimes boring because it is straight to the point and she does not know how to tell jokes.I would suggest that you answer the worksheets and practice tests she posts on Canvas and go to her office hours. Overall, I would recommend taking her for Chem 1301. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:CHE 1301 - As with the rest of the reviews, Dr. Chu is a nice person overall with a straight forward class. Lectures: She gives you fill in the blank notes and just teaches the information straight of the slides. Not too exciting but it works HW: Online problems every week or so about 20ish. Always an extra credit assignment, but she caps homework percentage at 100% so I just did the normal assignments. Exams: 2 Exams were Outside Class Time which wasn't great. Around 50 if I remember corretly with some true or false to start and a bonus question on each exam. Pretty standard difficulty.I didn't use the book rather the fill-in notes to study. Attendance: Attendance is counted each day and is a percentage of your grade. You should be going to every class anyway, but it's interesting that its part of your grade. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1301 - I have nothing but very positive things to say about Dr. Chu to other people looking to take her class. I like her teaching style. She is very thorough in explaining the concepts. There are some topics that she discussed that are not in our textbook. But that is okay because I learned a lot. Her class is hard but I think she taught us well to be prepared for our next chem class. - Grade In Class:B
Comments:1301 - Dr. Chu is the worst. Honestly I would not waste your time reading the comments, just take someone else. She does not teach, just reads off the slides and when you go to office hours she doesn't answer your questions well at all. I hate to say it, but she is also rude. Test averages are usually F's and she blames it on students. No honey, this is gen chem I it's your fault for being a bad teacher, not ours. - Grade In Class:B
Comments:1301 - Many of the reviews on here cite Dr. Chu's sweetness and kindness. While she is a sweet lady, that has nothing to do with her teaching ability. You will basically have to teach yourself in this class. In fact, if you didn't get graded on attendance, you would be better off to just stay at your dorm and read over the PowerPoints yourself. She recites the same information as her presentations, and you will need to depend on OwlV2 to actually get you any practice or comprehension on the topics. If the class average on a test is a C or a D, she'll just shrug and tell you all to try harder. It will not cross her mind that her lack of instruction might be to blame. I hated this class more than calculus. Yes, CALCULUS. Take this only if you have the mental capacity to withstand insane amounts of stress when you are forced to make up personally for her lack of teaching skill. - Grade In Class:B+
Comments:1301 - Dr. Chu is one of the sweetest, if not the sweetest, professor at Baylor. She is helpful in office hours and wants her students to succeed. She has four tests and drops one of them. The second test was extremely hard and nearly a quarter of the class failed the exam. However, the other tests are not as bad. Dr. Chu prints out the PowerPoints for you and you will need to fill in some blanks throughout the packet. She does make attendance part of your grade, and while 2% doesn't seem like a lot, it can be the difference between a B+ and an A. She does assign Owlv2 like every other professor in the department. There are also weekly quizzes online which are 8% of the grade. The final is worth 30% and is half cumulative and half over the last chapter. I put in more work for this class than any other class. The class stretches every inch of your critical thinking on tests, but an A is attainable if you are willing to work really hard. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1301 - Dr. Chu is a really really sweet lady. But I had to really work for an A in this class. All of my friends who were taking other professors did not have to know everything that I had to know for Chu's tests. The true false is THE WORST and is where I lost most of my points on tests. She puts practice tests on canvas which a pretty helpful. Only take her if you are willing to put in a LOT of work for this class. I ended up teaching myself most of the information from the book. I would take someone else if you are looking for an easy A. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1301 - I can not say enough nice things about this women. She is extremely helpful and an absolutely wonderful teacher. She prints out most of the power points for you and goes through each problem step-by-step. I'm not very good an chemsitry and she made it very easy for me to understand. You will have 4 tests and the final. She does Owl as well and that counts as a test grade which is a great grade boost. The owl also has extra credit so it is super easy to get a 100. In addition, for every test she will upload a practice tests and additional practice worksheets to canvas. Take her as a teacher, you won't regret it!!! - Grade In Class:C
Comments:1301 - The sweetest professor on campus hands down. She genuinely cares that you learn the material, so tests are not ridiculously hard, but definitely aren't a walk in the park. If you go to your office hours she'll give you lollipops and ask about your day. amazing. Gen chem is just hard in general, but if you're willing to make an effort an A isn't too hard to make. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:CHE 1301 - Dr. Chu is such a kind soul. She is the SWEETEST (and most stylish) professor I had my first semester, and her class is definitely doable. I did not take AP Chemistry in high school, so I did not have much background knowledge in chem going into this class, but this did not prove to be an issue. I would say that the nicest thing about her class is that she gives you all the tools necessary to be successful in her class. She prints out powerpoint notes so you don't have to read a single word out of the textbook (I didn't open mine once the entire semester), and she gives you practice tests on canvas which are VERY similar to the actual tests. If you know all of the information on these ppt notes and understand how to do the questions on all of her practice exams, then you are guaranteed a good grade in this class. Some people say her test q's are pretty tricky, but honestly I found them to be pretty straight forward and simple. The biggest downside of her class was probably her somewhat dull lectures that led me to fall asleep every. single. day. BUT hey I still got an A so if I can do it, you can too!! - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1301 - She is so nice and such a wonderful professor! She is really patient and tries her best to explain everything to students! I cannot find another professor that teaches such good in Chemistry! She is also an amazing person and I’ve learned a lot from her! - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1301 - Dr. Chu is a really kind soul. You can tell she takes pride in what she does because she is so enthusiastic to teach-even at 9 am. Dr. Chu has a lot of bad reviews on here, but I actually really liked her. She prints out all the lecture slides for you to follow with/study and explains concepts easily. Dr. Chu loves answering questions and LOVES when students come to her office hours. The only problem I had with the course is the exams. Her exams are definitely challenging. They really zone in on the nitty gritty rather than the whole picture so you really have to pay attention during her lecture. I would say that in the chemistry department, you either get a good teacher with hard tests, or bad teachers with easy tests. I think Dr. Chu is a good teacher so her test tend to be on the more difficult side. As far as homework, it's the same across the board. Every class (from my knowledge) has to complete online chemistry modules that can be tedious at times. On the bright side, that's the only homework she assigns. You don't have to read the textbooks or complete quizzes in her class which is nice. Taking her class will definitely prepare you for the upper level chems, but you will have to do outside work to get an A in her class. If you attend the SI sessions, ask questions, and go to office hours at least once per unit, you are sure to get an A. Overall, I recommend Dr. Chu for chem 1301! - Grade In Class:B
Comments:1301 - Dr. Chu is amazing. Her class is hard but she is such a genuinely caring professor. She starts every class with a scripture and seems to find her love of chemistry in her wonderment of God's creation. Class moves quickly and there are a lot of exams but would definitely recommend taking her! - Grade In Class:B
Comments:1301 - Dr. Chu has got to be the sweetest, and most caring woman I have ever met in my entire life. She GENUINELY wants her students to do well, and she is always available to her students in some way or another. She works out every type of math example on the whiteboard in front of you, and prints out all your notes for you. The homework assignments are not time-consuming at all, and the tests require about 3-4 hours of studying, but breaking it up over the course of a few days is a good idea. It is definitely possible to get an A in her class, if I would've dedicated a few more hours to studying for tests, I probably would have gotten that A. The SI sessions help tremendously, and explain all the concepts you may be confused about. Don't worry about understanding her, you will adjust to her accent as time goes on. She is awesome! Take her if you have the chance! - Grade In Class:B+
Comments:1301 - Dr.Chu is a very nice professor. She hands out notes that you can fill out as she goes over the powerpoint. It helps to read these note packets and do the practice tests before the actual test. She really cares about her students and often seeks to do the best for them. The key is going to her office hours. Go to class, read over the notes, go to SI, and ask her any specific questions you have during her office hours. She clears up questions and nicely explains what you need to know when you go to her office hours. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1301 - Dr. Chu may be the nicest little lady in the world but she is an awful professor. For one, chemistry is a lot of math and she would skip over mathematical practice examples and say "finish this at home and if you don't get the correct answer come to office hours" BUT would never give us the correct answer. All she does it read off of the powerpoints. She doesn't explain how to workout problems. Her tests are MUCH harder than the practice tests. On exam 4 the average was below a 60 and she doesn't curve. DO NOT TAKE HER if you want a good grade in Chem 1 - Grade In Class:C+
Comments:1301 - Dr. Chu is not a teacher. She reads entirely off her PowerPoints, and does not explain the material. The first couple chapters of 1301 is all stuff everyone learns in high school, so it will seem like she is a great teacher. But when the new material arrives (oxidation reactions, etc.) she does not explain it AT ALL. Besides having to teach everything to yourself, Dr.Chu is the sweetest little lady ever. You can't not like her. She cares about her students almost too much. Throughout the semester she assigns HW through OWL. The HW is easy and doesn't take too long. The problem throughout the semester though, was she would always change the due date. So when people are staying up until midnight to finish the asssingments and then the next day in class she says she's going to extend the due date, it is extremely frustrating. Overall, one of the most caring professors at Baylor, but needs to work on teaching the material and making class more interesting. - Grade In Class:B+
Comments:CHE1300 - Dr. Chu is a very sweet lady and really wants her students to succeed in her class. However, she cannot teach. She uses power point slides from the textbook and simply reads them off the screen to the class. Language is a bit of an issue because she can't always understand questions or explain things in a way that makes sense. Whenever she tried to explain or work through a complex topic she over complicated things and left me very confused. I mostly looked up you tube videos to teach myself chemistry and to understand what was going on. She LOVES true/false questions and floods the tests with them. I was overall very frustrated when I learned that everyone else taking CHE1300 had a different teacher who was better at explaining things and gave substantially easier tests. Dr. Chu is a great lady but I would not recommend taking her if you are inexperienced with the course she is teaching. - Grade In Class:B
Comments:1300-03 - Dr. Chu is a very sweet and tender hearted lady, but she is not a teacher. She lacks the ability to teach. She cares very much about her students, but language is a barrier for her that makes it to where she is not able to explain concepts clearly. She also uses the powerpoints directly from the textbook and reads from them giving no further explanation. When she does problems on the board, about 80% of the time they have mistakes in them. We have found mistakes in her grading of tests as well. She is very possibly one of the sweetest ladies teaching and she starts to hand out bonus points left and right towards the end. She also is a sucker for people asking for extensions. All of our homework is on OWLV2, which I personally enjoy, but she always says, "this is the last time I am going to extend the due date" and then extends it for all of the assignments. I believe that if you are looking for someone to teach the material, take Dr. De Mesa. - Grade In Class:B+
Comments:1305 - TAKE DR. CHU!!!! She actually wants her students to get As like she repeated that statement over 10 times throughout the first week of classes. She's a sweetheart. Attendance counts for extra credit on exams (10 points extra!!!). She is very through with explaining concepts and is very patient and loves when you come to office hours for help. She also almost always gives extensions on Mastering Chem, which is niceeee. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1301 - Dr.Chu is the best professor to take for 1301 Chem. She's so nice and is pretty good at explaining the concepts. She gives out up to 10 extra credit points on each test just for attendance and also has extra credit questions on most tests. Theres 5 tests which seems like a lot but she drops one and creates a 6th optional test to replace your second lowest test grade. You'll get an A on the tests if you just spend a few hours days before the test to review the powerpoint packets she gives out and by doing the mastering chem questions for practice. The only homework she assigns is mastering chem (like every other chem professor) which counts as a test grade and has a lot of extra credit on it so even if you get a few questions wrong you still get an A. This semester she only had 8 am classes but its worth it if you want a good chem professor. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1301 - She is a great teacher, very sweet and cares about the class doing well. I strongly recommend taking her. Class attendance counted as bonus points but you still couldn't miss 11. Tests were not hard they had problems from the practice test that she puts on canvas for you to study from so if you use them you will be fine. Homeworks were long but not hard, if you needed help you could got to office hours. And she has an accent but it isn't bad, you will adapt quickly. TAKE HER!!! - Grade In Class:B
Comments:1301 - Pros: -Supper nice lady -Helps you a lot answers your questions very well - Go to office hours she is very helpful there - Attend class she gives extra credit for that on tests - She gives alot of extra credit - helps students by making tests easier almost everytime - On that note if you have a good chemistry background you will be fine, I studied for each test a night before and pass them all with good grades If you dont have this background then it will be more of a challenge but you will be fine. - Very flexible with due dates will move a test if you ask with a good reason -Prints and gives to students all her powerpoints everything that is there is in the tests. - Mastering chem is easy lengthy but easy OVERALL SHE IS A GREAT TEACHER I DEFINITELY RECOMMEND HER -Cons - I was in her 8 am class so i was falling asleep - Has a soft voice so she may sound like uninterested but is not - Grade In Class:A
