Comments:ACC 2303 - Professor Carpenter is a great guy, but he goes really fast in class. He also doesn't show much mercy when writing exams. However, he gives unlimited attempts on the homework, weekly quizzes, and simternship, which add up to about 30% of the final grade. Exams, including final, are worth 14% each, and you really only need a 55 exam average to pass the course. Everything is multiple choice, which is nice. Barely made it out, but that's just because I'm bad at accounting. There are way worse professors out there than Don Carpenter. - Grade In Class:C |

Comments:ACC2303 - He is a unique and entertaining instructor. His teaching style is quite laid-back, and he often incorporates humor into his lectures, which keeps the class engaging. However, this means the pace can feel slow at times, so patience is key.
When it comes to tests, they are very straightforward and easy. Make sure you study the review questions because the test questions are almost identical. If you prepare using those, you’re practically guaranteed a great grade. If you are looking to major in accounting, you should be getting above 95% on all of his exams post extra credit.
Homework is manageable, taking about 2.5 hours a week, so it’s not overwhelming at all. Overall, wonderful class with a lot of laughs. - Grade In Class:A |

Comments:Financial Accounting - Ok don't be afraid of accounting with this guy. He is a nice southern man and anyone who says he is bad at teaching are out of their minds. Those are the same people who sit on their computers and play 2048 or watch netflix at the back of the room. If you want to do good in this class, SIT IN THE FRONT. Sitting in the back will be way harder to retain info. As brutal as it is, ASK QUESTIONS when you are confused. He might make fun of you, but it at least will help you learn. If you go to office hours you can literally sit there as long as you want and he will answer all of your questions. I personally thought he was a great teacher but even if you don't think so, it is so hard to actually fail the class. You get 5% more on every test just for doing your homework. Some of the test questions are totally free so it really isnt that bad. I would say, if you do every problem on the practice tests he gives and understand WHY the correct answers are correct and why the incorrect answers are incorrect you will be more than fine. The SI reviews are really helpful too. GO TO SI. If you do the SI worksheets too like there is genuinely no reason to "fail". Also, if you bomb a test, there is another optional test to get up to half your points back. Some people just aren't good at accounting but those people should get a B- at worst. I put "almost no workload" but for the first 3 weeks of the class just grind out all the stuff super hard and the homework for like week 3 is kind of annoying but after that you can basically chill a lot. I got a 104 on 3 of the 4 tests and a 101 on the other. On the final though I thought it was super hard like wayyyy harder than the other tests but I still got a 90. basically, don't count on your final to replace your lowest test because it is way harder. Moral of the story, Don Carpenter makes this class as bearable as it could possibly be. Do practice tests, go to SI, and ur perfectly fine. - Grade In Class:A |

Comments:ACC 2303 - Dr. Carpenter is incredible. Now, I am biased as an accounting major, but he is partially the reason for my decision to do accounting. If you are naturally good at this class and you enjoy the material, truly consider accounting. Dr. Carpenter's classes are lecture style with 150 students, if you don't pay attention in class, it is easy to get lost. However, his office hours are helpful and he has videos on Canvas. There are typically two homework assignments a week, and for me they mostly never took more than 45 minutes. There are four exams throughout the semester and one final. He gives a 5-point bonus on exams for all homework assignments being above 90, which is easy, there are 100 attempts. The exams consists of 30 multiple choice, and the final has 50. I got A's on all the exams and probably studied no more than 3 hours for each of them. Dr. Carpenter is awesome, he even offers to get a meal with you. He also has lots of industry experience at Waste Management. - Grade In Class:A |

Comments:ACC 2303 - Truly my favorite class. Certainly a love-it or hate-it subject, but Don is seriously the best. His lectures are very easy to follow and he always stops to make sure everyone in the room understands it, even in a 200 person lecture hall. He always brings life and humor to often boring material and is very personable. He also brings a very helpful practice worksheet with a real-world example to every class. The homework is online and in a software that can often be quite tedious, but is pretty good about explaining your mistakes to you and gives you unlimited tries. It isn’t a huge part of your grade, but its definitely needed to do well on tests and if you complete all of them fully for a unit, he gives you an extra credit point on the test. The tests are difficult, but not too bad if you just study and truly work to understand things. There are 4 of them and a final that can replace your lowest grade. They have 30 MC questions and take place on Lockdown with the webcam. Between the practice questions he posts in Canvas, the lab work, and the optional SI that is very popular, there are always plenty of resources to take advantage of to do well on tests. As a side note, you also have to take a corresponding 1 hour weekly lab where a grad student helps you work through another practice worksheet to further reinforce everything you are learning. Overall, I couldn’t recommend him enough and am so grateful I had him. - Grade In Class:A |

Comments:ACC 2303 - I feel like an outcast not being a Don Carpenter stan, tbh, but I just wasn't a fan of the guy or the class. Maybe accounting just isn't my thing. In my opinion, the class was painfully long. In many ways, his gimmicks that he adds to his lectures felt like wastes of time. I don't need you to pull out charcoal from your grill to entertain me. Maybe its just me personally, but I learn much better when a professor just actually spends the whole time doing examples and problems, not opening "cat euthanasia clinics". And for everyone that says it helps you remember better, I took him Spring '23 and I remember the coal and the clinic, but I don't remember what they had to do with accounting so... He was very rude and judgmental during office hours, which discouraged me from going. You can do well in this class, for sure. I managed to pull an A (a 90 being an A is legendary, I'm not gonna lie) but I just hated the class the whole semester. Call me crazy, idk. - Grade In Class:A |

Comments:2303 - Don is a great intro to accounting! His lectures were never dry, and were often fairly entertaining- you can tell he was trying hard to make it interesting. As for homework, we had 1-2 online assignments per week with 5-20 questions each, but you had unlimited attempts for full credit. If you got 90+ on all homeworks, you would get 5 points of extra credit on that exam (including the final). There were 4 exams, one of which could be replaced by the final. The exams are all multiple choice and online with Lockdown Browser on your own time, and the content was not incredibly difficult. Absolutely everything you needed to know could be found on the published PowerPoints and on the homeworks- knowing the vocab and concepts and how to do basic-to-moderate difficulty problems was all you needed. Tests never worked full income statements or balance sheets, but if you did poorly on a test, you could always go in the next Saturday to work one of these to replace your exam grade (warning: it replaces it whether you do better or worse). Homework and participation (show up to lab for a 100) made up 20% total, aka a free 20 points if you care enough to get it. The 4 exams and the final were all equal weight, so the final is also low stress. He is also a great person outside of class and has long office hours and really liked getting to know us individually. Would highly recommend! - Grade In Class:A |

Comments:2303 - Have no idea why Don gets these amazing ratings, he's kind of an awful professor. His whole style of online teaching sucked. He spent our one in-class day reviewing random slides and maybe doing 1 or 2 problems (which he usually messed up because he didn't do the math in advance on his iPad). I mean, sure, he's a very nice guy and I'm sure he's got some know-how in his noggin, but it doesn't show. His recorded lectures mean you spend way more time doing accounting than you would if you were in a regular semester. The videos are also not very good and often have mistakes in them that he doesn't correct until the end, if at all. It's a ridiculous amount of work per chapter and the turn around on tests is way too quick (and this one isn't totally his fault since our semester got shortened because of COVID, I know.) I just think he could have done so much better, but he's a flop. The labs are also basically useless and my SI was awful, so I basically had to teach myself everything. Also, his tests are purely conceptual besides the odd 2 or 3 math related problems, so that screwed me. I'm lucky he gives out those bonus Saturday exams because while I usually hovered around the 60's for the conceptual/initial exams, I was close to perfect scores on the work-out tests. He also gives out 5 points of extra credit on the exams. if you do all of the textbook homework before the deadlines. Don, you were there. and that's about it. - Grade In Class:B+ |

Comments:2303 - This is the best financial accounting class, hands down. If you want an intelligent, lively, and caring professor, Don Carpenter is your man. Although accounting can be a tricky subject at times, Professor Carpenter does a really great job of explaining the material in a thorough and memorable manner (whether it be with nerf guns, charcoal from his barbecue grill, model cars, etc). You can definitely tell that he wants his students to succeed. With that being said, tests can be a little tricky, but as long as you adequately prepare for them (e.g. with SI, Canvas study aids, practice tests), you should be okay. In summation, this class is great (because of it I’m now considering switching majors), so do yourself a favor and take it! - Grade In Class:A |
