Comments:ENG 2310 - I retook English after missing classes before, and compared to my last class with multiple choice quizzes and essay exams, I found DeJong’s structure better for learning. Some people think English is a blow off class, but this one strikes a good balance between learning and being manageable. Each class is discussion centered but not intimidating, which makes it easier to participate. DeJong is chill and approachable, emotionally intelligent, and brings great insights that make the books and literature more engaging. He genuinely cares about his students since he let me redo a poetry response and make up missed quizzes. There are quizzes for most readings, three reading responses (one can be a poem recitation), plus a written midterm and final. The workload isn’t heavy, but you still practice writing skills and stay engaged. You get three absences without penalty, and no technology is allowed in class. Overall, it is a good balance of structure and flexibility, and I would recommend it if you want to learn without being overloaded.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:2310 - let me just preface this by saying that i do not like english but i still think there is a much better professor out there for this course. there is readings, some are unnecessarily long and some are easy, but you HAVE to read them because there are pop quizzes. i did every reading and still got an 80 on one... there are 3 reading responses (400-600 words) and one main essay (1200 words?) where he wants you to come up with an idea that isn't generic, and his grading was super subjective and he didn't point out where and why he took off points. there's only 2 exams (midterm and final) WRITTEN BY HAND which was insane and my hand cramped by the end, the final was more manageable because you have 2 hrs vs the ordinary 50 minutes. he gives a random part of a passage, you have to identify it and tie it to a larger theme and one HUGE essay section; so yes you genuinely have to study for this and really understand almost every reading. my BIGGEST issue was that this is a no technology class which is crazy and you have to carry around so many papers and i love keeping everything on one device. the one good part was that i got a 100 on attendance/participation when i didn't even show up to every class, so all you have to do is say at least one thing during class and you'll be ok.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:english 2310 - I had Tim first semester sophmore year. He is a alright teacher it does look like he wants to teach. You did have reading responses I think like 3 or something. And white a bit of reading. Also big warning you have to read all the readings bc he gives you pop quizzes that are not multiple choice! The test were not multiple choice which for it was hard bc I don't do well with nonmultiple choice test. I think we had 1 or 2 essays. Over all he was not bad its just the way he formated things I did not like. So if you don't like pop quizzes and non multiple-choice test don't take him. If you also have bad testing skills like me then yes don't take him. side note te tesr are short answer essay and def.  - Grade In Class:D

Comments:ENG 2310 - Dejong is a nice guy, but he is not a very fair professor. The assignments do have very clear instructions, and his grading is super subjective. He would take points off for obscure things sometimes and other times he wouldn't. This class did not have a lot of work though, just reading before each class. We did 3 reading responses over the semester and had a midterm and final. The class was discussion-based with a lot of in-class group writing responses. Overall, he's probably better than some professors, but you could probably find a better prof  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:ENG 2310/2301 - I do not understand how there are any negative ratings for this man, I took him for both Brit lit and American lit and he is super chill, great at teaching and integrating students in discussions, and has very fair policies and assignments. He has random pop quizzes over the readings, but they are very easy and honestly help you keep you accountable. Highly reccomend  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:ENG 2310 - I loved Dr. DeJong. The class itself can be boring at times if you are not interested in English, but I think he tries his hardest to make it enjoyable. I recommend talking in class because participation is a section of your grade, but also because it makes the class more fun. It is easy to talk in class because Dr. DeJong will never say your idea or interpretation is wrong. There are pop quizzes, but if you read the readings they are easy. For the most part the readings were easy to get through, fairly short, and pretty interesting to read. There are only 2 novels you have to read, the rest are short stories. A large section of the course readings are ghost stories which is pretty fun to read. There is 1 essay, but if you go to office hours he will help you with it. I would highly recommend going to office hours. I would recommend taking Dr. DeJong.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1310 - I think Dr. DeJong is a really nice guy, I'm in STEM so this was just a gened class I had to take, so writing is not my favorite. His class was more than manageable, however, and for the essay's (three total) we were given plenty of time to turn them in. He was more than willing to answer any questions and offer his expertise. All of his assignments are straightforward and give a lot of room for our own thoughts opinions and creativity. I enjoyed this class and the writing theme! Would recommend  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:2301 - ENG 2301- I really enjoyed this class and Dr. DeJong’s lectures as a whole! He offers interesting insights and encourages useful class and group discussions. He is always open to hearing the class's interpretations, and though I’m a STEM student, I really enjoyed diving deeper into the texts. Some of the texts were difficult to understand upon initial reads, but overall they were pretty interesting and I enjoyed reading them. The pop quizzes are purely based on what happened in the section of the reading we were assigned to have read for that day- nothing that requires a deep understanding or analysis of the text. As long as you read the assigned readings, which are never really excessive, the pop quizzes will be fine. On the chance that you completely forget to do the readings and there happens to be a pop quiz, he does drop one quiz grade, and a second one if everyone completes an evaluation. If you give yourself adequate time to complete the work, then this is by no means a strenuous course. Overall Dr. DeJong is a great and fair professor, who really cares about Literature and helping his students understand the material.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:2310 - I can't even begin to say how much I disliked this class. Yes, the workload is extremely light compared to other classes, but if you're not an english major, I'm assuming that this class is going to be one of the most boring you'll take. Although there are few assignments, I found that he never gave specific, clear, or helpful directions. This became extremely frustrating for me during this class because he is such a tough grader. He will take points off but not explain why in his comments (especially on the final!!). One time I emailed him wondering why I got a specific grade on my essay, and he took DAYS to respond to me, and told me that he doesn't grade for effort. Save yourself some frustration, and consider taking another professor.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:1310 - Dr. DeJong is honestly such a great guy. He is so helpful with any questions you have for him. Class is super great and he is always having us look over each others work, which helps a lot. Overall, great guy and great class.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:ENG 2310 - I really enjoyed this class! Dr. DeJong is super nice and really opens your eyes to what's really going on in the texts you're reading. In class, we discuss the reading and a bit of the history on the author and time it was written which helps tie everything together. We had quizzes about once a week over the reading just to make sure we were reading them. If you end up not having time to do the reading, Sparknote it to get a general idea and you'll be okay! There were three reading responses (400-600 words) and one essay (1500-2500 words). He does a great job of explaining what he's looking for and giving tips on how to write it. This was my favorite class this semester and I definitely recommend Dr. DeJong!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:2310 - Good class, nice prof. As someone who took a lot of higher-level Englihs classes in high school, I wasn't super wowed at how hard this class was. Some of the readings he assigns are tedious and tough to get through, but Sparknote before or after and you'll be totally fine. The midterm and final are easy as long as you've done your readings, but you might have to put in a bit of extra work if you want an A. Overall really manageable class that usually focuses class time around discussion and typically has weekly quizzes to make sure you stay up to date with readings.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:2310 - Dr. DeJong is such a great guy! You can tell he really loves teaching and hearing what his class has to say about readings we’ve done! He’s a really laidback and relaxed guy, but he also will grade a bit hard! As long as you do the readings you’d be fine!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:2310 - He's alright. It's a really easy class if you don't love english and just want a passing grade with a light workload this is the class for you. His reading assignments are pretty large but just Shmoop or SparksNotes it and you'll be fine. He gives pop quizzes but like I said if you Shmoop or SparksNotes it right before class you'll most likely get a 100%. He has 4 tests including the finals and they are pretty easy. There are 5 short answers on any of the books in the unit. As long as you can write reasonably well and review the novels before you'll be good. He doesn't do a research paper at the end, he instead does 3 reading responses (400-600 words) over any reading he assigns and 1 essay (1500-2500 words) about themes and how they tie into the books we read for the semester.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:1304 - I think DeJong is a pretty underrated English professor. I am not someone who enjoys English whatsoever, but he makes class bearable. He grades fairly/easily and is happy to help with coming up with essay topics or how to write your essays. I'd definitely recommend taking him!  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:2304 - Hands down one of the best professors I've ever had. He loves what he does and if you pay attention you will make a HIGH grade. I put nearly no effort in and was one point shy of an A. Overall, if you get the chance to take him don't think twice.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:1304 - I’m surprised he has a lower rating, he was one of my favorite teachers! Class was sometimes boring but there is also not much material for this course. He does give pop reading quizzes but I was able to guess which days every single one of them would be. Other than that the class is a graded off of 4 essays, all of which there is plenty of time to complete and the way he outlines the essays I found it very easy to get them finished on time without any stress. He is a very fair grader (which is the most important thing for an English class!) we had a lot of leeway to choose what our essay subjects would be over, and I actually really enjoyed researching for the essays. He was very approachable and really helpful in coming up with ideas for major paper. The final exam was just a short and casual presentation of our major research paper. Highly recommend Prof DeJong for 1304!!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:2304 - Dr. DeJong is a good teacher. It's not the most exciting class, but he makes it manageable. He gives out pop quizzes on the reading every couple weeks, but you can tell when he's going to give one out. There's a lot of reading, but you can spark note it and do well on the quizzes/tests. His class is an easy B and maybe work a little harder for the A.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:ENG 1304 - Nice guy. He's like 30 or something, so he's pretty cool. Although on the first day, he seemed really nervous and awkward to talk in front of the class, but after a while, he got less nervous. Class was 4 papers (you could correct and return a paper within a month of the due date for a higher grade- for each paper) and some pop quizzes on the readings (trust me, the readings are dumb, but do the readings). A little picky on your papers, but not terrible. If I gave him a grade for my experience in his class, I'd give a B. Not terrible, but not absolutely amazing either.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:2304 - Terrible teacher. This class is extremely boring and there is ALOT of reading. I fell asleep every class and when I was awake I was bored out of my mind. Did not learn anything in this class. Don't take him.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:American Lit - He's a very nice dude, explainable since he's a canadian, probably had 6 quizzes, 1 midterm, and a paper (also participation grade). I hardly read but tried taking decent notes each class. Of course spark notes is always clutch. I'm sure there are better options, but he really is a decent professor and class is very manageable.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:American Lit - the class is a walking B grade... hated the unannounced quizzes, just like every English class... you BS your papers and tests and slay on. Overal, average guy, never payed attention iin class, just played slither.io  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:2304 - I really liked DeJong. His classes are a little boring and he is a bit of a harsh grader, but it is obvious he really loves the subject and cares about his students success.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:2304 - Actually not that bad of a professor, he's still pretty new to the game so it's obvious he's still trying to get a feel for how to present himself and the class. He likes to ask a lot of questions regarding the readings during class in a discussion format so getting engaged with him makes the class more interesting and entertaining. He does have about 5-8 pop quizzes during the semester about the readings but he let's you know about this and usually you can get a feel for when the next quiz will be, usually 1 quiz a week or so. He also assigns one large essay at the end of the semester based on one of the readings but he assigns that over a month before the due date so you get plenty of time, and it's worth about 25% of your grade so doing well on it can help. Overall pretty average professor, not too difficult, very knowledgeable, pretty laid back but a little awkward, but since he is new to teaching he's still trying to find his style.  - Grade In Class:B
