*A 5 star workload is an easy workload; a 3 star is average; whereas a 1 star workload is extremely hard.
Comments:CHE2416 - While it is true that Dr. Solouki is not the best lecturer, some of the reviews really exaggerate his apparent inability to teach. The course is difficult and not very forgiving (exams and homework are all via Achieve and the lab can be brutal) but Dr. Solouki really tries to help the students succeed in the course. His lectures are a bit disorganized and can be a bit of a struggle to sit through for 75 minutes, but he is extremely smart and is very willing to help you outside of class if you ask. He also held workshops outside of class to prepare for some exams and the final, which were very helpful in reinforcing some of the material. The course has a reputation of being a GPA killer, and Dr. Solouki's teaching ability is not the best, but he is a very sweet man who is more than willing to help you if you need it. - Grade In Class:B
Comments:CHE 2416 - This class is very inorganized and he taught the same exact material for three straight lectures. He then proceeded to quiz us over material that he did not teach us. Very forgetful and would write the same values on both side of the equation. I will say he was a nice person, but probably just not meant to be teaching at this level. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:2416 - This class is extremely time consuming. Dr. Solouki is a very nice man but the labs for this class, which make up 30% of your grade, are extremely hard and they do not explain how to present the data or even how to break the data down. Lab reports take hours, and the homework is excessive, but if you put time into the class you will get an A. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:CHE 2416 - Dr. Solouki is a caring professor who has your best interest in mind. With that said, this class is challenging and lacks structure. At one point, we were weeks behind in material. The quizzes and exams (online format along with lecture) were all on Sapling Learning along with your homework and textbook if you choose to do so. The textbook and homework do not always correlate. There will be some sections of the textbook where you are only taught the concept of something using a different problem; then, you have to use those concepts to solve new problems. Some of the concepts taught in this class are very abstract and require a large time commitment. If you have not taken statistics before this class, you will struggle with your first few lab reports and the Statistics section. The homework assignments do not always follow lecture, again, because we are very behind schedule. The first two tests are the same as the homework but use only the challenging problems for the most part. One of the exams is take home, all that this means is that you don't have to be in a Zoom meeting to take it. When I had to take this class, there was no other choice of professor. Regardless of the professor, however, I feel that this is a very difficult class to teach with a lot of material and Dr. Solouki did the best he could with the time he had. - Grade In Class:B+
Comments:CHE 2216 - He really enjoys student interaction. He takes the time to answer questions. Sometimes this takes up the entire class period, so that kinda stinks. He is not as available as other professors. He is very nice and wants you to understand the material, but often we don't get through the material in class. He really tries to help the students by curving the test or giving bonus points. - Grade In Class:C+
Comments:CHE 2216 - I went into this class scared out of my mind that I would fail. Boy was I wrong. The reason people are saying he is bad professor is not because he is, but because the class was full of graduating senior who wanted someone to ease them out. This is a good class to take with CHE 1302 (if you have taken AP Chemistry and have a good handle on the concepts) because it's basically the same thing, just with extra statistics. Make you go to him if you have any questions: he is happy to help out. Also, he likes when people ask questions in class (we got a take-home exam out of that). He is a really nice guy who does all he can to help (he added some mysterious bonuses to our exams last semester). Don't be afraid. Just be ready to work. Most of what was said about the labs here is pretty accurate. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:CHE 2216 - This guy can go to hell because he is just awful - Grade In Class:B
Comments:CHE 2216 - This rating has two parts. The first will be about the lab because it is definitely the worst part of the class. Be prepared to receive the lowest grades you have ever seen in your life on lab reports bc they are graded 40% on Accuracy as of Fall 14' and everyone always has terrible accuracy. I made an 84 as a lab average after 2 drop labs and it was the highest grade by 10 pts (Avg was about ~50) However i do not know if this was just my TA (Jackie Lochridge) being a harsh grader outside of accuracy or the class itself. Also Labs take 3 hrs on average and it is often like watching paint dry. I actually fell asleep standing up while filtering Calcium precipitate. The Lecture however is an entirely different story, Dr. Solouki is a great person but he is not the best teacher in THE CLASSROOM SETTING, in the words of my TA "He Tries to wing it but he can't". He is very helpful 1 on 1 and I would recommend you ask any questions you have directly to him. He responds to students only in person so DO NOT EMAIL HIM (you will literally never get a response). In spite of this, he will do almost anything to meet students needs (he gave us a take home exam bc we asked for one) and the final was literally copied and pasted from that take home exam. The first 2/3 of the class (including the 2 exams during the semester) are a review of gen chem and basic statistics, If you did well in stats and gen chem, you will be golden. The only new thing you learn in the class is spectroscopy. If you are struggling with HW, buy the solutions manual. That really helped me narrow down the amount of questions i had to ask him during the semester. He isn't the greatest teacher in a group setting but he is always there in his office hours and is helpful 1 on 1. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:2216 - God Bless this man, he is the absolute worst professor I have ever encountered in my life, if you are taking him, then you might as well just give up all hope. This man is rude, talks down on his students, and especially boring. I would rather get back with my ex than listen to this man talk. Just study your ass off and you might get a B. Maybe about 8 hours a day 7 days a week should suffice. - Grade In Class:B
Comments:2216 - If you are taking 2216, you have no choice but to take him. His English is hard to understand and his voice puts you to sleep. If he even gets around to teaching the lesson for the day, his examples are useless. The midterm and final are pretty much your only grade and the questions on them are nothing like the examples he gives. If you want to learn anything you have to go to his review sessions which can last hours and only end up covering 3 or 4 questions. The lab part thankfully is 50% of your grade. The reports take 10ish hours at first but once you get it down it's about 4. With an A in the lab part and an F in th lecture, it still evens out to a C. - Grade In Class:C
Comments:2216 - The sad part about having this guy as a professor is that if you end up taking him, chances are you had no choice. He doesn't know how to teach, point blank period. So be prepared to spend a lot of time teaching yourself...just know that it's possible to do well in the course overall despite his lack of teaching ability. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:CHE 2216 - I went into the semester thinking I'd enjoy this class and professor. Boy was I wrong. Solouki might as well not actually have class and stick to the review sessions because we learn absolutely nothing in the lecture. He expects you to remember everything "from freshman". I did fine on the midterm but only because I basically read the textbook word for word; if you relied on what we covered in class, your grade probably wasn't that good. I'm so happy I heard he won't be in charge of this course next semester because I wouldn't wish this frustration on anyone. The lab portion isn't bad (really what saved my grade in this course); just realize you can't sloppily complete your experiments and expect to get good grades. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:CHE 2216 (Meas. & Tech.) - I've heard in the past this lab was miserable because accuracy was 40% of your lab report grade. Spring 2013 was very doable (10%). The labs are long and tedious sure, but you'll live. The lab reports ranged 2-10 hours of work (usually err on the side of 10), but you have all week and at some point you have to learn to write a lab report. It's practical. Make friends with your TA and they grade easy, extend deadlines, etc.. As far as Solouki goes, he's a pushover, but it's because he cares. He doesn't cover very much throughout the semester, in fact most is review of material "that you learn in freshman" as he says. But he does cover everything very thoroughly, explains things pretty well, is helpful in office hours, and holds reviews outside of class to do practice problems. Your grade comes from your lab reports, a few online homeworks and in-class quizzes, a midterm, and a final. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:2216 - The labs are actually fine. KNOW THIS GOING IN: You should have a background in Statistics before taking this class. He assumes you've taken some sort of stats class before, even though it's not a prerequisite. He also has a high voice and doesn't speak English clearly. Does he wear his microphone during the lecture? Eh.... only when he feels like it. He SUCKS at teaching, but he's learning. If you go to his office and complain enough, he'll give you an A. I'm not saying I did that, but a lot of my friends who--let's be real--suck at Chemistry did that, and they got As too. Make friends with your TA. They will save your butt later on. Sorry for all those Biochem/chem majors who have to take this class. I feel ya. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:2216 - The lab portion of this class is tedious, but okay. As long as you are getting decently accurate measurements (most of the labs are graded for accuracy), you will have an A in the lab portion, 50% of your grade. The other 50% comes from the lecture. Before Solouki, Rabbe taught this lecture and it was a blow-off, easy A class. Solouki has made this class nearly impossible. Our class average on the midterm was a 52%. He is terrible and random at explaining topics, and his tests are so ridiculously difficult that I came out feeling like I had no idea what I had just done. The only reason I managed an A was because he replaced the midterm with the final, and he added in a bonus quiz because of the poor midterm average. Avoid this class at all costs. I took this class for a CHE minor, expecting Rabbe's easy A. This was the most frustrating, hair-pulling, nonsense class I have ever taken. Unless you want to study 7-10 hours a week for a 2 hour chem class, don't take Solouki. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:2216 - The lab part of this class is really not bad. It is a lot work but you can manage to get a good grade in that. The lecture part however, is a waste of time, especially because he doesn't know how to teach. he is new at this and is not good. Dr. Rabbe taught this before and was way better at teaching it. He sucks. That's the end of it. - Grade In Class:B
